Introduction: Customizable 3D Printed Laser Cut Lamp

About: I'm a Mechanical Engineer who has been a part of this community for over 10 years! My interests have evolved over time, and now center around 3D printing.

I love 3D printing. It can be used in nearly any application, and can create complicated, easily customizable, precise objects.

I wanted to make some interesting accent lighting for my room, so I decided to use 3D printing, laser cutting, and inexpensive LED light bulbs to get there. This is a super simple project, and I'm really happy with how they turned out!

To complete this project you will need the following materials:

  1. HDX 12ft Indoor Extension Cord - Home Depot - this one is the most similar that I could find online. The one I purchased is white.
  2. Electrical Outlet Lightbulb Adapter - Home Depot
  3. LED RGB Lightbulbs - Amazon
  4. Birch Plywood (1/4")

Additionally, you will need these tools

  1. 3D Printer, or a 3D Printing Service - I'd recommend 3D Hubs! They will connect you to people locally who own 3D Printers, and want to run your files for some extra cash. Use the code MKSHWHBVCV to get 15% off your order!
  2. Laser Cutter, or a laser-cutting service - this is optional to cut panels, but you could 3D Print some as well! Get creative with how you customize!
  3. Hot glue gun
  4. Sandpaper/razor blades - optional

Step 3: Assembly

To assemble your lamp, follow the following:

  1. If your 3D printer was unable to print 6.5" tall, you'll need to print the pieces separately, with a main frame, and extensions for each post. Use a hot glue gun to attach the frame extensions.
  2. Press the electrical socket lightbulb adapter into the extension cord. On this extension cord there are two sides. We want to use the side with only one socket.
  3. Screw LED lightbulb into the adapter.
  4. Using a hot glue gun, attach the extension cord to the 3D printed frame.
  5. Use a laser cutter to cut panels for the sides and top of your lamp. I won't go into details here, because each laser cutter and material are different. Be creative and try out different types of side panels and top panels! Slide them into place. The frame is meant for 1/4" plywood, roughly 6mm thick.
  6. Use the remote that came with your LED lightbulb to create the perfect accent lighting!

Step 4: Variations and Conclusion

Using different materials and patterns for each panel makes this lamp infinitely customizable! Laser cut and etch different mateirals to make different light patterns. 3D Print panels with different depths, thicknesses, and holes in them. Cut a frame to mount a knitted side or top panel to! There are limitless variations to be created.
