Introduction: Disco Shark Hat

Who wants to transform themselves into the victim of the world's glammest shark? Well, really the question is, who doesn't?

With this little make, you can have your very own glittery predator to feast on your flamboyant cranium.

What you'll need:

Step 1: Assemble the Foam Core and Slipcover With Disconium

Create Shapes for the Foam Core
  • Trace a loose fitting knit cap and draw a shark outline around it. Cut that out and trace another piece, leaving off the fins. Cut that out as well.
  • Cut out separate triangles for the dorsal and lateral fins. Cut a triangle (rounded at the top) to be an upper-lip/nose.
  • Pin all the pieces together with safety pins to test the fit...adjust shapes accordingly.

Prepare and Assemble Disconium Slipcover:
  • Trace the larger foam shark piece onto the disconium fabric.
  • Cut two pieces of the traced shape, leaving around a 1/2  to 5/8 inch seam allowance around the edges. Repeat for the three fins. For the upper lip do the same, except cut only one piece.
  • With right sides together, sew the two largest pieces of disconium together, leaving open the mouth edge and the space for the dorsal fin. Sew on the upper lip - the rounded corner should be placed where the two large pieces meet at the top of the mouth. Turn right sides out.
  • Sew the covers for the fins and stuff them with foam pieces.
  • Stuff the large foam pieces into the fabric slipcover. On the inside, hand sew the upper lip and two side pieces together at the corner.
  • Cut slits in the fabric to correspond with the fin slots in the sides of the foam. Hand sew the fins into the slots on the sides and on the top.
  • Reinforce any joins in the foam with hand sewing as desired.

Step 2: Teeth and Bloody Mouth Liner

Create the Mouth
  • Cut a long rectangle of the red velour fabric, the length of the circumference of the hat opening and the depth of the hat from the opening to the crown.
  • Cut a bunch of white triangles out of the felt and pin them to one of the long edges of the fabric at regular intervals. The pieces of felt should be pinned to the right side of the fabric and the points should be facing toward the opposite side of the fabric.
  • Baste the teeth on and sew the two short ends together.
  • Turn the fabric tube inside out - right side and teeth on the inside.
Attach Mouth to Shark
  • Pin the tube over the outside of the head opening lining up the fabric edges. The teeth should be invisible in between right sides of the velour and the disconium. Sew the edges together.
  • Turn the velour right side out and sew the top seam in the same orientation as the dorsal topline.
  • Hand sew the top seam to the foam at the top inside of the hat at the corners, or as desired.
Add Eyes
  • Cut two back felt circles and two slightly larger white felt circles.
  • Sew or glue the black felt on top of the white.
  • Sew or glue the circles onto the hat in the position of the eyes.

Step 3: Shark Attack

Once you have completed the hat, you are ready to launch an attack. A very groovy, disco attack.

The most appropriate place to launch a disco shark attack in the metro DC area is, of course, Nationals Park, in support of Roger "The Shark" Bernadina, the nation's most beloved backup outfielder. Even Abraham Lincoln loves The Shark!

But you may opt for another appropriate venue, such as a beach or a nightclub. Also perfect for special holidays, like Halloween or Shark Week!
