Glowing Dragon Rider Costume / Disfraz De Jinete De Dragón Brillante

I made this for the spring carnaval in Valdivia, yeap, I live in south hemisphere, and summer it's coming.
The costume represent the heraldic shield of the city.

the flag was the spanish flag, the shield holds the city shield and the knigth and a big serpent are in the top of the shield

here is a Wikipedia article about the city of Saint Maria the White of Valdivia, the very noble and very loyal.

Hice esto para el carnaval de primavera de Valdivia, yo vivo en el hemisferio sur y viene el verano.
El disfraz representa la heráldica del escudo de armas de la ciudad.

la bandera era la bandera de Carlos V, el escudo corresponde al heraaldico de la ciudad y lleva sobre el un yelmo de caballero y una serpiente enorme.

aqui dejo un rticulo de wikipedia sobre la ciudad de Santa Marria la Blanca de Valdivia, la muy noble y muy leal.

Step 1: Materials You Will Need / Materiales a Usar

I use
For dragon

• 9 pieces of paper, 50x70 cm each one
• white and red paper pieces for details.
• green pants
• monster slipper
• few meters of galvanized wire
• some others of phone cable
• 9 white leds
• a indestructible original dragon hearth or a archaic nokia phone battery, another battery it's fine

For the armor

• internet access to instructables.com (really I used this)
• some paracord
• cardboard
• metallized paper
• a shirt
• a red cape etc.

Hardware and tools

• a nail
• electric tape
• a electric welder
• scissors and glue
• sellotape
• pliers

A usar
Para el dragón

• 9 pliegos de cartulina, 50x70cm, verde.
• algo de papel rojo y blanco para detalles.
• pantalones verdes
• pantuflas de mounstruo
• unos metros de alambre galvanizado
• un par de metros de alambre telefónico
• 9 leds blancos
• un corazón de dragón auténtico e indestructible, sino hay usar una batería de teléfono viejo, yo use una de nokia.

Para la armadura

• internet para ver instructables.com (enserio)
• algunos cordones
• cartulina metalizada
• carton de caja
• una camiseta
• una capa roja, una bandera blanca con una cruz roja al medio, etc.

Herramientas

• un clavo
• cinta de aislar
• una soldadora electrica
• tijeras y pegamento
• alicates
• cinta adhesiva

Step 2: Knigth in Armor / Caballero En Su Armadura

here is needed the help of Instructables

• for the helm I used this link Cardboard Knight Helmet but, the instrructions are here. then I decorate it with this a paper feather.
• for the armor I used something like this, but I glued metallic papel por making it more awesome.
• the spear is a pvc pipe painted with the city flag, no explanations for this.
• the shield was a local version of this one

aqui use ayuda de instructables

• para el carco use esto Cardboard Knight Helmet, pero las instrucciones las pille aqui instrucciones, incluyen dibujos, solo hay que escalarlos apropiadamente. luego le puse unas plumas de papel
• para la armadura esto puede ayudar, pero igual que al casco le puse cartulina metelizada para hacerla mas brillante.
• la lanza es un tubo de pvc pintado con la bandera de la ciudad, nada que explicar mucho.
• el escudo es una version local de este

Step 3: Origami Part / El Origami

Since this dragon is the big brother of this one Tiny Origami dragon kite I wont the make a big explanation of the origami part, but I upload this guide for 6 of the pieces of the paper for the dragon, the point lines are valleys and the diagonals are mountains.

Is more easy make the 6 pieces firts and the stick together with the sellotape 3 of them for the neck and the another 3 for the tail, extra, make another but reduce the size of the width i the paper to make the end of the tail.

I improved the wings with a simple fan of origami that I split it to make a god surface. (1 piece of paper by each wing)

(I know, I no documented so well the process, you can see I was making the costume literally on the march to the carnival XD )

Como el dragon es el hermano grande este otro pequeño cometa de dragón de origami, no quiero explicar mucho como es esta parte, aun asi les pongo esta gui para que la usen en 6 pliegos de la cartulina, las lineas a segmentos son valles y las diagonales son montañas.

es mas facil hacer 6 piezasy juntarlas con la cinta adhesiba, 3 para el cuello y otras 3 para la cola, ahi puedes hacer una pieza extra para el extremo de la cola, a esta pieza hay que ir estrechando el ancho del papel para que termine bien.

improvise las alas de un abanico simple de origami que estire para darle un volumen apropiado. (un pliego cada una)

(se que no documente muy bien el proceso, , como ven en las fotos, termine de armar el disfraz sobre la marcha al carnaval XD )

Step 4: The Dragon Head / La Cabeza Del Dragon

here is no accurate plan, I do it based in instincts and the help of Tin (yeap, use a Expert in dinosaurs to make a dragon, can help so much, even more if he likes help) you can take inspiration in the blue dragon ilusion for the idea of papercraft, do it simple, use the red paper inside and the eyes and use a white one for make theeths.

no hay un plan preciso, lo hice a instiintos y la ayuda de Tin (sip, tener la ayuda de un experto en dinosaurios para hacer un dragon, puede ayudar muchisimo, mucho mas si le gusta ayudar) puedes inspirarte en el dragon aul de ilusion para hacer una papercraft sencillo, no te compliques mucho, usa el papel rojo adentro y en los ojos y los dientes en blanco.

Step 5: Electric Part / La Parte Electrica

I use a parallel electric circuit for this part, work with leds is a new thing for me and the Circe theater in a box help me a lot with a simple trick, use a cellphone battery to illumine the dragon. with a phone cable (I recycle it from trash, is simple to use because it have different colors in the wires inside).

if is your first time in this took those cares

• look at the leds, you can see that leds are two different size needles.
• fix the longs ones of all leds to the same wire (I use the white one)
• fix the shorts ones to the another wire (orange, in this case)
• when you fix the led, you must contact the metal from the led to the metal of the wire, it found if is twisted around, but welding are finest.
• aislate the needles and wires to avoid accidental contact of the both wires (short-circuits)

NOW I have a Christmas lights with batteries, if is more easy use it, use it.

Use un circuito paralelo para esta parte, trabajar con leds es algo nuevo para mi, pero el teatro de titeres Circe en una caja me ayudo bastante en un simple detalle, los leds prenden bien con el volatje de una bateria de telefono para el dragon. use un cable de telefono (lo recicle, lo mejor es que los alambres dentro vienen de colores)

si es tu primera vez con leds ten estas considraciones

• fijate en los leds, tienen dos "patitas" de diferente largo.
• las patitas largas van en el mismo alambre (yo use el blanco)
• las patitas cortas van en el otro alambre (en este caso naranjo)
• cuando unas las patitas a los cables debes contactar el metal de la patita con el metal del alambre. funciona si lo tuerces alrededor, pero soldado queda mucho mejor.
• despues aisla las pattas y el alambre "pelados" para evitar el contacto entre ellos y que se hagan corto circuitos.

Ahora tengo unas luces de navidad a pilas, si tienen acceso a unas, usenlas es mas facil

Step 6: Put the Dragon Parts Togethers / Uniendo Las Piezas Del Dragon

here the wire and nail part is

use the nail as needle in the origami body to make path to the wire as the diagram, I put this draw because I lost any time to take pictures of the making process.

paste with sellotape the wire in the inner part of head in order to make it solid.

aqui la parte del alambre y el clavo

usa el clavo como una aguja para hacer un camino para el alambre, como en el diagrama. puse este dibujo por que perdi cualquier oportunidad de mostrar fotos del proceso.

pega el alambre con la cinta adhesiva al interior de la cabeza para hacerla mas solida.

Step 7: Dressing the Dragon / Poniendose El Traje

here is the simple part, dress the pants, armor, shoes, and the dragon. use the wire to close it and make it confortable as adapt to your belt.

if you have troubles, remember you can use it as scarf XD

aqui la parte simple, ponte el pantalon, pantuflas, armadura etc, y el dragón, cierralo alrededor con el alambre y adaptalo para que te sea comodo al cinturón.
