Introduction: How to Install a GPS Monitor

Welcome and Purpose

Today I will be asking you to follow the steps provided to install a GPS Monitor. One might ask, "Why do I need to know how to put on a GPS monitor." Well these devices can be made available to the public for at home use. Our goal is to see how simple or challenging you find the given instructions. Our note taker will be recording your reactions to each of the steps you follow. Thank you for agreeing to test and evaluate our instructions.

Step 1: Gather Your Equipment

GPS Components

  • GPS Device
  • Strap
  • Back Plate
  • Top (Oval) Pin
  • Bottom (Round) Pin

Step 2: Attach the Back Plate and Strap

  1. First you will place the back plate against the participant's ankle.
  2. There will be numbers on the back of the strap labeled 1-10.The most common numbers you will use is 5 or 6. Set the strap on top of the back plate.

Step 3: Attach the Strap

Now that we have the strap and back plate together, we will lock the strap in place.

  1. Wrap the strap around the participant's ankle and place one set of the strap holes over the locking posts on the back plate and the second lock post.

Step 4: Test the Fit

Once the strap is connected to the back plate and secured, slide the strap up and down the participant's leg to make sure it is not to tight or loose. If the strap too loose or tight, undue the connection are repeat step 3.

Step 5: Attach the Monitor

Now that we have the proper fit, we will attach the monitor to the strap and back plate.

  1. With the barcode on top of the monitor facing up, place the back of the monitor against the locking guides and roll the locking tabs into the back plate. You will hear a snap once its connected.

Step 6: Insert the Top Pin

Now that the back plate, strap, and monitor are connected; apply the top pin.

  1. Put the top (Oval) pin in

Step 7: Insert the Bottom Pin

Now that you have the top pin in, its time to insert the bottom pin to lock the back plate, strap, and monitor all together.

  1. Take the bottom (round) pin and put it at the other end hole.
  2. Push the bottom pin in. You will hear a lick indicating both pins are connected. If you do not hear a click, you put he bottom pin in wrong. Take it out and try again.

Step 8: Attaching the Device

When inserting the pins, be sure that they are being inserted correctly by making sure that the notch on the bottom pins is in line with the notch on the bottom of the device.

Also, note that the top pin can only fit into the top of the device one way.

Step 9: Test Monitor for Comfort

Lastly, you will have the participant put their foot down and have him/her walk with the monitor on. By having them do this, you are testing:

  • If the monitor is too tight or loose
  • Is it comfortable on that leg (can be switched if needed)?
  • Is the monitor staying stationary?

Step 10: Final Recommendations

  • Recommend to the participant to not swim with the device on their leg.
  • Wear long sock to keep the monitor stationary.
  • Don't play any physical contact sports.
