Introduction: LED Bulb Retrofit for Halo 998 Eyeball Trim

This instructable describes how to modify Halo 998 eyeball trim pieces to accept the LumiSelect PAR/R16 dimmable light bulb from earthled.com.

The LED bulb is too large to fit through the eyeball opening of the trim piece, but with a little bit of effort and some machine screws, you can make the bulbs fit perfectly in the eyeball trim, and they look like they were made just for this purpose.

For each light, you will need:
(1) Halo 998 Eyeball Trim Piece
(1) 4" Recessed Can, such as H99RT
(1) LumiSelect PAR/R16 Dimmable LED Light Bulb
(2) 4x40 3/4" machine screw
(4) 4x40 nut

Step 1: Remove Lamp Socket

The trim piece has a lamp socket that the light bulb screws into. This socket needs to be disconnected from the trim piece.
On the particular trim pieces I have, the lamp socket is held in place by two rivets. Using a drill bit, carefully drill out the rivets, freeing the lamp socket from the trim piece.
Be sure to remove all metal shavings from the trim piece and lamp socket.

Step 2: Assemble Light Bulb and Socket

Once you have removed the lamp socket, screw the LED light bulb into the socket.

Step 3: Fit Bulb Assembly Into Trim Piece

Fit the assembled light bulb and socket into the trim piece from the rear of the trim. You may have to bend the brackets that held the lamp socket assembly outward slightly. Be careful not to bend them too much. You don't want them to break off.
The lens of the LED bulb should fit nicely into the trim piece.

Step 4: Fit Screws to Brackets

Place a machine screw up through each bracket where the rivet used to be. Thread on a nut to hold the screw upright. You do not need to tighten the nut down, just put it on with your fingers. If you have lock washers, you can install one now.

Step 5: Fit Lamp Socket Onto Screws

The lamp socket should now fit nicely onto the machine screws. Make sure the brackets are straight, and fit the socket onto the screws evenly.

Step 6: Secure Lamp Socket to Trim

Thread a nut onto each screw to hold the lamp socket in place. Do not tighten them down yet, just put them on snugly with your fingers.

Step 7: Tighten Nuts to Lock Lamp Socket Into Position

Rotate the first nut that you placed on the screw back against the lamp socket to secure the socket into position. At this point, you can tighten the nuts against the lamp socket assembly. The bulb should be held securely in position, but without too much pressure on the light bulb itself.

Step 8: All Done

Your custom LED lamp assembly is now ready to install! It will install just like the original trim piece.
