Introduction: Make a Mantis Terrarium in a Pinch

Mantids are fascinating little creatures. They're an excellent resource for finding and dispatching other insects, they look terrifying but are surprisingly easy to handle, and they're quite easy to care for. Mantid's can be found in fields, gardens or your bushes. Though they look like they could rip your finger off, fear not, you can scoop them up in your hand without loosing any digits quite easily. If you want, you can even make a small habitat for them with only a few easily obtained materials.

Step 1: Materials

You will need the following:

You will need a few tools:

  • Scissors
  • Pen or Pencil

Step 2: Make the Terrarium

If you're using a mason jar, remove the inner seal and use it to trace a circle on the paper. Cut out the circle you just graced and poke a few air holes in it. This paler will replace the seal to allow airflow but prevent the mantis from escaping.

Step 3: Adding the Mantis

Finally add a few sticks for the mantis to climb and hang onto. Add the mantis and enjoy. Some basic care tips:

  • Feed every 1-4 day's. Small insects such as flies or crickets are great.
  • Clean out the container once a week or as needed.
  • Mist the habitat once a day or two for the mantis to drink (no water bowl necessary).
