Owl Costume

I started my DIY costume by finding a plain long sleeved brown top and skirt from local stores and thrift stores. Even better would be a plain brown dress!
I sewed the two parts together.

Next, I purchased sheer fabric, 800+ feathers from ebay, fur and a plain white mask.

Cut the wings into large 1/4 circle shapes, sewing the non-curved sides onto the side and along the bottom of the sleeve of the dress on either side.

Now the fun begins - the feathers! I worked in layers. I sewed the bottom layer of white feathers on by lining them up and stitching over them tightly. I then did more layers on top with different colours. To finish off the wings and make them extra full, I randomly glued more feathers on the underlying sewn-on layers.

I cut a circle out of a messy fur fabric for my chest piece. I then glued on a few feathers for that ruffled look.

I used a pair of old brown flats that I already owned for my shoes, gluing feathers over the front of the shoe in a fan shape.

The mask was a blank mask that I painted. When painting, keep in mind the characteristics of an owl. The feathers glued above the eye and the beak really makes the owl mask recognizable.

I messily curled and backcombed my hair so that I could stick feathers into it.

This was a very fun costume to make!
