Introduction: POD - Recumbent Computer Desk V3.0

Premise:
For thousands of years our species has used "Tables". Starting, I'm sure with a slab of rock and advancing into carved and sculpted wood and metal, the basic form of the table/desk has remained virtually unchanged since its inception. With the advent of the computer our uses and time spent at the rudimentary platform have changed and increased dramatically. We spend entire days seated in front of our glowing terminals at work, at home and now just about anytime we're walking around. Our bodies are not evolved into their frequent use and thus we have strains and pains which have not ailed us thus far. Now we have shoulder and lower back pain, carpal tunnel and neck strain. Life long users of heavy computer use are reporting fused vertebrae and other severe degenerative effects. Ergonomics have come so far, however most of the ergonomics in the world have warnings of a time use maximum of 20-30 minutes. There is a problem with this: Flow(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology)). To achieve flow we must be working on the same task without interruption for at least 20-40 minutes. Staying on a computer that long, even with the best ergonomics on the market and we're at the threshold of incurring physical damage to our bodie The solution? It is time to vastly change the way in which we use long use computing technology.

As a heavy computer user I have noticed significant levels of back pain and strain over my thousands of  computer use. I have devised several devices which I'd like to share with you. This is an on going process in what I believe to be the evolution of ergonomics in long term use of Personal Operating Devices (computers, etc.)

Since using this device (9 months in testing, 16 hours longest recorded session, daily use) I have noticed a significant decrease in shoulder, neck and lower back pain.

I will include in this document versions 2 and 3 of the Recumbent Computer Desk (RCD).  As these devices are constantly in revision I will update this page as I continue my R&D.

The first design was to be an enclosed RCD. After its construction I immediately disassembled and began work on 2.0. I found its design to be suffocating and coffin like. The second design is that of an independent desk which was amazing for personal gaming and simulations, however it was inaccessible to others who literally had to lay on the floor to observe what was on the screen. A flippable screen allowed (with Desktop rotation) the ability to set it up as a theater, however it was not optimal for watching videos with others.

Pictured above is version 2.0.

The third version of this device, again in test phase, has become a bed mounted structure. The greatest obstacle in the design has been to emulate as closely the laying upright position while not taking up an entire separate bed space. Therefore, I have mounted this to a bed to save space. I am using a variety of pillows right now for cervical support and another pillow for my keyboard arm support. I'm using a trackball to minimize wrist damage. Version 3.5 intends to be a redesign on the keyboard and mouse combo, which will also include arm support. Pictures uploaded for V 2.0. Will upload 3.0 ASAP.
