Step 1: Various Modes of Practice

MeshMixer is wonderful in terms of allowing designers to generate variations; however, it's also great to use the Edge Exploration tool to make the solid forms into porous features and look into the structural integrity of the forms that you design in the CAD. These forms could then inspire and inform further exploration of how one could design their shapes. In this particular example, we used the shape as a format to display the various axis of the linear modular brick.

Step 2: Video - Edge Exploration Tool

This video tutorial was made possible through understanding a free software by Autodesk, called MeshMixer. The video shows the step-by-step process of how to click through the buttons to generate the forms that I used to make the form with the porous features.

  • Software(s) –
  • AutoDesk MeshMixer
  • AutoDesk Spark G-Code Editor
  • AutoDesk Spark Lattice In-Fill Editor
  • AutoDesk Inventor
  • McNeel Rhinoceros 3D
  • AutoDesk Screencast Recording

Step 3: Output Through 3D Printing

After generating a form or making various iterations through MeshMixer, one could easily make their forms in real life through 3D printed versions of their digital files. In our case, we explored the formal explorations in various 3D printed formats, and explored various types of printed forms through the Fortus, Objet, and the ZCorp machines. Various other instructables within our account showcases how to generate these other forms on the various other machines.

Then, you're good to go. Make a photoshoot within a well-lit room with a step-and-repeat (sunny/daylight is generally the best for the naturally lit photos).
