Rebar / Log Bar Stools -- Bancos De Bar Varilla / Troncos

Hi everybody this time I build this cheap stools from upcycled wood, I always wanted to do something including industrial elements I think this type of furniture its called "brutalism" . This project come with some challenges that i will explain in the way.

They are dirt cheap to make, you don't need many tools, you can build them in one day , and because they are some kind of rustic don't have to be perfect that's the beauty.

Also I dont know why I build bar stools if I dont drink XD

Hola a todo mundo esta vez decidi realizar estos banquillos para bar de madera reciclada y varilla . Siempre habia querido contruir algo con elementos industriales en muebles creo que a este tipo de mobiliario lo llaman "Brutalismo" . Este tipo de proyectos llevan consigo varios retos que ire explicando en el camino.

Son muy baratos , realmente no necesitas muchas herramientas , puedes construirlos en un dia, y como son rusticos no tienen que ser perfectos esta es su belleza

No se por que construi unos bancos de bar si no bebo XD

Step 1: Get Your Hands on Some Free Log Wood, Madera Gratis

Due to extreme winds in my community many trees have fall down(this its not a windy area I hate climate change)some of trees have end in the middle of the car or walking roads, so I asked the authorities if i can remove them from the way and take the wood.(social labor and free wood).

I used my Milwaukee fuel saw Its a beast it turned 2 trees into branches and logs with just 2 batteries .

Debido a los vientos extremos en mi comunidad muchos arboles han caido (esta no es una zona de viento maldito cambio climatico) algunos de estos arboles calleron en calles y pasos peatonales, decidi preguntarles a las autoridades si podia cortarlos y llevarmelos, dijeron que no habia problema(no queria que penzaran que estaba talando los camellones) (Labor social y Madera GRATIS)

Step 2: Cutting the Logs -- Cortando Los Troncos

Maybe the hard part of this project its cutting the logs especially if you dont have a chai nsaw like me. I used again my Milwaukee sawzall with a 10 inch sawzall blade , it take about an hour to cut all the 8 pieces.

Talvez la parte ma dificil de este proyecto fue el cortar los troncos , especialmente si no tienes una motosierra como es mi caso voli a usar mi sierra Milwaukee con una sierra de 10 pulgadas tomo alrededor d euna hor acortar todos los 8 pedazos

Step 3: Plaining Flat / Cepillado

As you know endgrain can't be flattened with a plane so I used a Router with a flat 3/4 cutter and some guides sorry for not showing a proper photo in this section but You can look at it in the video.

Como muchos sabran el cepillado transversal de las fibras de la madera no se puede realizar ni con un cepillo ni con una canteadora por ello usar un router con una fresa de 3/4 de pulgada con un escantillon , lamento no haber tomado una foto de como realize esto pero puedes verlo con mas detallle en el video

Step 4: Bark Removal -- Removiendo La Corteza

I wanted to this project to keep the bark but there it have no consistency in some parts its very stable and in others it's rotted so i decided to remove all. After removing all the bark I rounded the edges

Realmente queria que este proyecto mantubiera la corteza pero no era consistente en todo el perimetro , en una zona estaba fuertemente agarrada y n otras estaba podrida, por eso decidi removerla. Despues de eso redonde con el router todas las orillas

Step 5: Rebar Bending -- Doblado De La Varilla

After cutting all the pieces to size I star to bend all the parts , I used my home-made bender of course all you can use a construction rebar bending tool but that one make sharper bends compared to using a die in the bender.

Para el doblado de la varilla use mi dobladora manual casera por supuesto se puede usar una grifa de construcción pero esas dan radios mas cerrados comparado al uso de un dado en una dobladora

Step 6: Welding the Base -- Soldando La Base

The base its made from 2 bases and 2 back supports with 4 transversal reinforcements there its more details in the video in how I aligned the pieces for welding, A very useful tool its the jawhorse with the welding jaws,(it's a shame that rockwell discontinued all the accessories for the jawhorse all them are awesome)

La base esta conformada por 2 bases 2 soportes para el respaldo y cuatro transversales para refuerzo de la estructura, mas detalles sobre esto se notan en el video de como los coloque para la soldadura , use mi jawhorse de rockwell con las mordazas de soldadura (una pena de que rockwell descontinuo todos los accesorios para este producto todos son fantasticos)

Step 7: Ataching the Wood -- Fijando La Madera

The logs are attached from the bottom with drywall screws , and in the back I drilled 1/2 inch holes into the logs and glued with construction glue .

Los troncos estan fijados desde el fondo con tornillos de tablaroca, el respaldo esta taladrado con dos perforaciones d emedia pulgada ademas de usar pegamento de construccion

Step 8: The Finish --- El Acabado

The Finnish was the most challenging part of the project because as you may notice the logs crack pretty quickly and its almost imposible to stop that until using pentacryl or dedicated products that are not commercial avaiable in my country so i decided to investigate about some controversial methods used by other people .

Antifreeze yes the one used in cars seems to be one very popular and controversial people using them have reported good result , first of all the chemical used in most antifreeze its etilen glycol and dietilen glicol both chemicals considered as cancerogenics and poisonous, s. anyway im not so scared about that im sure the gases from the welding in the previous steps are more harmful than using this , glycol are not a skin hazard just drinking it or smelling it, and i think no body its going to lick the seats but obviously you can't use it with a butcher block, also if smelling the gases are so lethal I should be dead for those times my radiator have blow the hoses of my truck. anyway do your research before using this one

polyethylene glycol, Yes also used in the versions of ecological antifreeze , this one seems to be the safest, also its present in some foods as a control agent you can obtain this one in food or pharmaceutical grade , please dont confuse this with dietilene or etilene do your research.

Sugar, water with sugar this also has been a old technique replacing the water with sugar in the structure of the cellulose but also it seem to have correct results you have to leave them in the solution for months and i have no time or space for that.

Glycerine , this one its the one i used and i have to tell that it have a 50 to 70 percent of being succesful at least with the type of wood used in this project, the cracks are significant less than in the ones i did not applied anything. I applied several coats during 3 days

El acabado fue el principal reto en este proyecto por que como muchos sabran los troncos cortados en madera transversal se quiebran casi al secarse muy rapido por ello me puse a investiga acerca de los metodos d epreservacion que existen , el mas apto parece ser el pentaacryl que no se vende en mi pais asi que lo dje fuera d ela discucion, y investigue sobre otros metodos un poco mas controversiales

Anticongelante si el usado en los carros la gente que lo ha usado reporta buenos resultados pero su uso es un tanto contoversial. esta compuesto en general por etilen glycol y dietilen glicol ambos marcados como cancerigenos y venenosos . no me asusta mucho esto ya que es peligroso inalandolo o ingiriendolo y pienzo que nadi va estar lamiendo la sillas pero obiamente no se puede usar en una tabla de picar, aparte probablemente es mas peligroso los gases de la soldadura del paso anterior. . aparte si fuera tan peligroso inhalar los vapores estaria muerto por cada vez que la manguera del radiador de mi camioneta se ha roto. como sea investiga correctamente antes de usar.

Polietilen glicol este tambien es usado en los anticongelantes ecologicos es menos peligroso incluso lo contienen algunos alimentos ocmo agente de control lo puedes conseguir con grado alimenticio o farmaceutico, no lo confundas con etilene o dietilene , investiga bien

Agua con azucar , un metodo muy antiguo que parefce dar buenos resultados el problema es que es muy lento tiene que pasar meses en la solucion en lo que el azucar reemplaza el agua dentro de la celulosa de la madera , y no tengo tiempo ni espacio para eso.

Glicerina facil de conseguir y barata fue el metodo que me propuse a utilizar y les puedo reportar que funciona entr un 50 y 70 porciento de satisfaccion , aplique multiples capas alrededor de tres dias hasta que no absorvia mas, se presentaron cuarteaduras pero menos que en las piezas en las que no aplique nada.
