Introduction: Shine Off

This is a project to modify a flashlight so that it cannot be shined in your face.

My children and I really enjoy playing flashlight tag but I hate getting blinded by a flashlight while we play. So one day I had an idea to modify a flashlight so it would automatically turn off if angled upward at my unsuspecting eyes.
If you hate being flashed in the face by a flashlight you will love this project.

Step 1: Things You Will Need

1- Suitable flashlight for modification. I bought mine at Walgreens for $5.00.
1- Reed switch. I had one laying around but you can get them at radio shack.
1- small magnet.
1- Straw. I got one from McDonalds.
Small bits of foam
A pin
Hot glue gun with glue
Solder iron and solder
A small amount of wire

Step 2: Disassemble

Disassemble the flashlight to determine how much room you have to work with.

Step 3: Make the Slide for the Magnet

Cut about 2 inches off a straw that your magnet can easily slide in. I used one from McDonalds.
Slide the magnet into it and plug the ends with a short piece of craft foam.
Use a pin to make a hole through the straw and foam.
Press a piece of wire through the hole and bend over the ends.
The bit of wire will help to keep the foam in place when the magnet is bouncing like crazy because someone is running from a mad now non-blinded bear.

Step 4: Modify the Switch

Unscrew the two screws holding the power button into place.
Un-solder the main power wire from the button.
Solder one side of the reed switch to the power button and the other side to the main power wire.

Step 5: Add the Magnet Slide and Reassemble

Connect the battery holder to the back to locate the best spot for the magnetic slide then use some hot glue to secure it into place.
I also put a small amount of hot glue on the loose end of the reed switch to keep it from moving too much.
Once the glue is cooled reassemble the flashlight.
Test it by having your kids or someone who likes to play with flashlights try to shine it in your face.
Use your best mad scientist laugh once you have foiled them.
