Introduction: Simple Planter From Scrap Wood

About: I enjoy repurposing and restoring old furniture and making woodwork projects that are not seen every day. I make most of my projects using wood that is either, recycled, reclaimed and love to repurpose and rest…

I had lots of scrap wood lying around and wanted to try and make some planters for my garden.

Step 1: Materials

  • Scrap wood
  • 20 x 410mm x 35mm x 20mm
  • 20 x 300mm x 35mm x 20mm
  • 4 x blocks for the legs
  • 4 x 360mm x 90mm for the base
  • table saw/saw
  • nail gun
  • glue
  • outdoor varnish
  • stain
  • 4 screws
  • Drill

My scrap wood was stained and varnished, so I ran them through a plainer to clean the wood up. Alternatively you will need to sand your wood to clean it up. I used the table saw to cut my wood into smaller lengths. Then set up guides on my table saw to cut all the lengths to the same size.

Step 2: The Layout

I lay the wood in the position that I wanted and used a nail gun to keep it in place. I attached the 4 pieces of wood to the base using glue and a nail gun. To add the legs I drilled a hole halfway into the leg and drilled a smaller hole right through for the screw. Screw the legs to the base.

Step 3: Building the Layers

Once the base is done, it is very easy to build you just need to follow the layout from the previous layer. Line up the longer pieces with the shorter pieces in between them, making sure the outside is all lined up. Then just glue and nail gun. You can build it to whatever height you want.

Step 4: Stain the Wood

Stain the wood and varnish with outdoor varnish. I would recommend that you stain the wood before assembly, as this was time consuming when already put together. Add your plants and you have a cheap and pretty planter for the garden.
