The procedures require minimal skill to execute. Any image can be turned into a covert data carriage to carry information to your friends, family and the police just in case someone might be stalking you and has threatened to do something bad to you or your family/friends if you told anyone about that guy. So then you could "act" like your filing a missing pet case (or something of that nature) and hand out some image with hidden data on it and a tiny note saying "This image is a steganograph" so the police can scan it and figure out what's happening. Of course, that's just one of many possible uses of steganography.

Step 1: Install Your Software; Take Your Pics

Of course you need the software. This software is free and efficient. Click on download mirror 1 if you live in the US and download mirror 2 if you live elsewhere. Refer to image 1 if you're still confused. When it's done downloading extract the .zip file to any folder you want.

You don't necessarily need to take your pictures right now, but it helps to at least test it with some sort of image.

Step 2: Using the Software to Put Data in Images

Access your software first. Go to the place where you extracted the contents and open the executable file (aka. .exe file) labeled "stegas" as in image 1. You'll then see a puny window pop up. Expand it a little so you can better see what you're doing. To load the image where you'll put the data in, click "File" then click "Load bitmap..." and select and load the desired image. Now that you have that image, you want the data in there. First, click "File" again then click "Add data file..." and select and open the piece of data you want in there. There's some extra info you would want to see on image 3 which has an image of a rudimentary drawing of a house and simple data there.

NOTE: I haven't found a way to delete certain data from the image, so choose your data wisely. And it only saves the steganographs in Bitmap files.

Step 3: Using the Software to Detect and Read Data in the Image

All you have to do is load the image with the data. That simple. If you still want visual aid then check the images. After you do what image 1 tells you, you'll see what you saw on step 2, image 3.
