Hello everyone!

In this instructables I'll show you how you can make a beautiful wooden toy train locomotive. This build was part of a miniseries I did on my YouTube Channel last year in December: Prepare Yourself For Christmas. It was a miniseries about making wooden toys and decorations as last minute Christmas gifts, but since I did not post it on Instructables, I thought this was the right moment to enter the "Toys & Games contest"! If you like this instructable and my video, don't forget to give me a vote in the "Toys&Games" contest!

Sooo, let's get started!

Supplies

Tools I used

- Tablesaw

- Jointer/planer

- Miter saw

- Sanders

Materials I used

- Wood glue

- Reclaimed wood

- Clamps

- Holesaw

Step 1: The Boiler

Picture 1: We will start by drilling some wheels for the boiler with a holesaw.

Picture 2: Glue all the circles together on a 6mm dowel. I'm making the boiler this way because at the point I was making the train(video) I had no lathe, but guess what: now I have a lathe, YAYYY! So probably there will be coming a third train in the future! (I already made a train in the past, with wagons)

Picture 3: When the glue is dry you can put it in your drill and sand everything smooth. At this time I was also rounding over the front edge of the boiler a bit.

Picture 4: Cut of the excess of the dowel at the back of the boiler. At the front you'll need a little bit of the dowel to stick out, then we can glue on another darker piece of wood to cover up the lighter dowel. You can see me do this in Picture nr. 5

Picture 6: Give the boiler a flat bottom on the beltsander.

Step 2: The Exhaust Pipe

Picture 1: I'm using a wooden dowel which I'm giving the right shape by turning it in my hands at the beltsander.

Picture 2: Drill a 10mm hole for the exhaust pipe.

Step 3: The Rest of the Parts

Now I will be making the rest of the body parts of the train locomotive. I'm cutting and planing my lumber into the right thicknesses.

Picture 1: The base was a tricky part to make: first I've cut it to length, then I've cut the front to a 30° angle on both sides of the front.

Picture 2: Now cut the front (from top to bottom) at a 60° angle.

Picture 3: Drill two 7mm holes in the base for the axles to go through.

Picture 4&5: Chamfer the edges of the roof (on the top) on the router table. I'm only routing two sides and then I will cut it to length on the miter saw. I will chamfer the edges of the other two sides on the beltsander, this will be safer for my fingers!

Picture 6: Drilling a hole with a forstner bit to make the window in the cabin.

Step 4: Assembly Time!

For the glue up I'm also using dowels, I'm doing this for two reasons: to make it stronger, and it makes it easier to clamp, because the glue won't slip.

Make 4 wheels for your train locomotive and glue them in place, finish with a few coats of mineral oil and your train is ready to rollll!
