550 cord or simply para-cord, refers to a specific class of parachute cord also known as type III cord and derives it's name from being rated to have a minimum breaking strength of 550 lbs. Mass production and the near infinite usefulness of this wonderful stuff has brought it into the lives of all of us. We couldn't let the paratroopers have all the fun!
This handy guide will give you a hint at some of the things you can do with 550 cord.
what is paracord?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? does the stuff even exist? i've looked everywhere to use it on the posable army men, but couldn't find it any where! RSVP!
they sell it in most outdoor stores like academy, gandermountain, sports athourity, bass pro, and cabelas, you will either find it in the survival stuff, or where they put all of the decoys and hunting bags and chairs.
paracord is used in parachutes and hase 7 internal strands similar to kite string encased in a rope tube. 550 gets it's name because it has a payload od 550 lbs. you can get it on ebay, amazon, or most surplus shops.
550 Cord is only used in certain types of parachutes. not all of them. its main use is in military type of parachutes (the round type that they us in Airbourne) Which first showed up in WWII then popped up in the civilian world after that. However, it is NOT used in skydiving. Skydiving Rigs contain either Dacron, or one other type of rope that i cant remember at the moment.
BUT none the less the Addage about 550 Cord having a payload of 550 LB. is a complete & total myth...550 LB is the MINIMUM breaking strength of the Military Specifications of Class III Paracord. there are in total 6 classes of paracord for the military...if you get the milspec stuff, you know its genuine. alot of these "designer" colored ropes and rope with different colors in it are usually not milspec. i know of a place that i bought "paracord" from but it wasnt really TRUE paracord...just a colorful pretender.
You also have to be careful about buying from an "other than military" source because they will often claim the product as paracord, but its reall a cheap made sheath of nylon over a cheap fluffy nylon core.
I personally buy my cord from www.supplycaptain.com i have not had a problem with them yet

I found it looking for something totally unrelated.
Funny how the old crafts that used to be looked down on keep getting reinvented, macrame to knotwork to soubidou to paracord
