Chair Upholstery 101 / Chair Makeover: HGTV Home Citron Fabric

This is not just a demonstration on how to reupholster a chair. This is also a guide with tips and tricks for starters. I will demonstrate how you can master chair upholstery using one of my kitchen bar stools as an example.

Step 1: First Things First

First off, the way to reupholster a chair is to look at it to make sure that it is in good condition. Otherwise, if the chair is completely broken, you might not want to use it for this project. Then, you want to plan out how you want to fix it: put new fabric on the seat, paint the frame. In the next few steps, I will show you how I reupholstered this bar stool which was found in our kitchen.

Step 2: Clean Chair

So, the real first step is to prep your chair by cleaning and dusting it off. For this one, I used Clorox Wipes to remove any dust or residue that might be on the chair.

Step 3: Prep Chair

Then, using a screwdriver, unscrew the seat from the frame. From there, you either leave the frame as is or paint it. My mother told me to leave the frame as it is, because it was actually hers, and she wanted to keep the color palette simple. So, I was like, let's go for it!

Step 4: Fabric

Now, comes the part with the fabric. Cut the fabric so that it is slightly larger than your seat. Then, either rip the old fabric off or staple down your new fabric over the old fabric. With this bar stool, the old fabric on top was pretty hard to rip off, because it was completely stapled down with a vengeance! LOL! Anyway...so I decided to take the fabric that I bought from Joann's (it's from HGTV Home), and stapled that over the seat. With upholstery, it deals with a lot of problem solving, like what would work for the project, and what will not work. You just have to experiment with the chair in this manner for even more perfect results!

Step 5: Assemble

Then, replace seat back onto the frame, and screw it back down in place to complete the look!

Step 6: Done!

And this is what it looks like in the end! I actually loved how the chair turned out, because the green and white fabric actually gives off that nice pop against the dark chair frame!
