Introduction: DIY 5 VOLT REGULATED POWER SUPPLY MODULE

About: Like to learn and do electronics and hardware stuffs

Hi friends how are you ?

i hope you are fine !

Today in this instructable we are going to make a Diy 5 volt power supply module for just 3$. cheap right !!!

Not only cheap It is also simple to make . you can use this simple power supply module for arduino , sensors and breadboard.

The reason i come up with this tutorial is , yesterday me and my friend working with a arduino project, he is absolute beginner to maker culture. so its my duty to teach him everything . when we completed our project we needed two 5 volt power supply module , i had only one i give it to him and made one myself with in 15 minute .

If you don't have a 5 volt power supply module in your hand, and no time for waiting until the shipping of the product . this instructable saves you like in these situation and also your valuable time.

This power supply module module is simple to make , i only took 15 minutes or less to make one , and it is cheap (i have only costed below 3$).

So it will save your time and little bit of money.

So,lets get start guys !!!!

Step 1: COLLECT THE PARTS

In the first step we need to collect some parts .the parts are cheap and easily available in radio shack or a local store.

I recommend to buy the parts from a radio shack or local store , because you don't need to wait until the shipment (if you buy from online stores you need to wait minimum a day to deliver the product),also these parts are availabale at cheapest rate like 0.80 $ etc.....

But i will give the links to all parts that i'am used here.

Some parts are lying around my home like general PCB, resistors,LED etc... i used them(to save money and time).

Here is the list of all parts.

HARDWARE:

LM 7805 regulator IC.

10 mf capacitor(2 nos).

IN4001 diode.

LED(green).

Male headers.

DC Power jack.

General purpose PCB(optional if use copper clad to make custom PCB).

Copper clad(optional if use general purpose PCB to make the module).

SOFTWARE:

Fritzing.

COMMON TOOLS:

Soldering iorn.

Soldering wire.

Soldering flux.

Hookup wire.

After collecting every parts we can go to the next step get ready for that guys!

Step 2: TEST THE CIRCUIT ON BREADBOARD.

No we have all the parts to make the power supply module . But before we make the power supply module on a PCB. We need to test the circuit on a Breadboard.

Don't skip the step, we need to check the circuit works fine !. Also you will get a little bit previous experience before making the PCB, and also reduce some errors while soldering on PCB.

I gave you the Circuit schematics and breadboard schematics. first observe the two schematics .

Then wire all the components as shown in the schematics.

After wire every component each other, Double check once again for any wrong connections.

If any wrong connection still existing , fix that.

Now we need to test the circuit works !

so take a 12 volt wall adapter i used a 12 volt 2 amp wall adapter shown in the above pictures.

Then connect to the power supply circuit . and turn ON the wall adapter.

Now check the LED is turned ON , if the LED turned ON take your voltmeter or multimeter then check the voltage of the output pin's LM7805 (it is probably 5 volt). if it gives a 5 volt output then we done the circuit works fine.

if the LED not turned ON also there is no output in output pins of LM7805 . suddenly turn OFF the circuit. Then check for the LM7805 is overheated(it will heat normally, check if it is overheated).

If it is overheated then , check for any wrong connection or any short circuit exists (check the pinouts of LM7805 is wired correctly).

After fix the problem . repower the circuit .

Now its works !!!

In the next step we will make the Diy power supply module on a PCB.

Step 3: DIY POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT ON GENERAL PURPOSE PCB.(optional Step)

friends , we done almost. Now we need to make the power supply module on a PCB.

You have two options , you can make it on General purpose PCB(explaining in this step).

Else you can make it your own Diy custom PCb.

If you going to make a custom PCB. ignore this step, else continue with this step.

So, lets get start.

I gave both the circuit schematic diagram and the General purpose PCB schematics refer those and do the below steps correctly.

1. First take your general purpose PCB, and clean the copper side as well.
2. Then rub sum flux on the copper side of the general purpose PCB.
3. After that mount the component, then solder it well.
4. After soldering components, connect all components like shown in the schematics using a hookup wire.
5. After soldering everything check for any short circuits and wrong connections.

Now we made our power supply module on general purpose PCB.

if you like to make the custom PCB for our power supply module see next step.

Step 4: CUSTOM PCB FOR POWER SUPPLY MODULE.(optional Step)

Ignore this step if you made the power supply module on a general purpose PCB.

If you like to make a custom PCB for your Diy power supply module, then follow these step.

  1. If you don't know how to etch the PCB, watch the above video.
  2. After complete the tutorial download the pdf file called POWER_SUPPLY.pdf
  3. After download the pdf print it on a photo paper.
  4. Then do as the same you saw in the tutorial video.
  5. After etch the PCB then drill the holes on the PCB using a 0.8mm or1.0mm driller bits.
  6. Then solder the components on the PCB.
  7. Check for any short circuit, wrong connection, breaks in traces(if found one fix it).

Test the circuit as like we said in the earlier steps. !!!!!!!!!

If you need to make changes in the PCB design follow these steps:

  1. First download the software called fritzing and install it on your PC (if you already installed ignore it else download from here)
  2. Then download the fritzing file called pcb_design.fzz given below .
  3. After download the file open it with your fritzing software on your PC.
  4. Then simply edit it your own style.

wooow, guys we made it !!!

Step 5: DONE !!!

We made the DIY POWER SUPPLY MODULE.

Now you can use it with your Arduino board , sensors ,raspberry pi , breadboard etc.....

you can use for anything that you need a 5 volt power supply.

If you like this give a good comment, if you made it upload the photo in comment section i like to see that,if you have any doubt ask me in comment section,

GOOD BYE FOR THIS TIME , SEE YOU IN NEXT INSTUCTABLES !!!
