PET Bottle Fish Trap (Trampa De PET Para Peces)

When I was a boy (many, many years ago), I used to go fishing. But I was never an sportsman, I only fished for eating fresh fish at night.

(Cuando yo era un muchacho -hace muchos, muchos años-, me gustaba ir a pescar. Pero yo nunca fui un deportista, pescaba solamente para comer pescado fresco a la noche).

One can catch two or three big fish, but it is easier to catch dozens of small fish. Fried little catfish are very tasty, just be careful opening and cleaning them prior to put them in the pan.

(Uno puede cazar dos o tres peces grandes, pero es más fácil cazar docenas de pequeños. Los bagrecitos fritos son muy sabrosos, solo hay que tener cuidado de abrirlos y limpiarlos antes de ponerlos a la sartén).

Step 1: What You Need:

- Two big soda bottles, 2 o 3 liters each. They can be smaller, but the result will be also smaller. If they are identical is better, but not essential. PET stands for PolyEthylene Terephthalate

- Packing tape

- Stapler (with its staples)

- Scissors, knife or so.

- A piece of wire to heat to the flame, or a soldering iron

- A piece of thread or thin rope

- A handful of small stones, which pass through the mouth of the bottle

- One or two cookies, or stale bread, preferably with fat (grease?)

(Dos botellas grandes de gaseosa, de 2 ó 3 litros cada una. Pueden ser más chicas, pero el resultado será también más chico. Si son idénticas, mejor, pero no es esencial. Pet significa PoliEtileno Teraftalato

- Cinta de ambalaje
-Abrochadora con sus broches
-Tijeras, cuchillo o similar
-Un pedazo de alambre para calentar a la llama, o un soldador para estaño.
-Un trozo de piolín o cuerda fina.
-Un puñado de piedritas, que pasen por el cuello de la botella
-Uno o dos bizcochos o trozos de pan duro, preferiblemente de grasa)

Step 2: Cut & Paste

1) Cut the bottom of one bottle

2) Cut the neck of the other

3) Put the mouth of this last bottle in the bottom of the first

4) Staple it.

(1. Corte el fondo de una de las botellas
2. Corte el cuello de la otra.
3. Ponga la boca de esta última en la parte inferior de la primera.
4. Abróchelas).

Step 3: FiNIshing (not Fishing Yet)

Make some holes to the device, so that when is immersed it plunge easily. I used my soldering iron, but a hot wire is the same thing.

These holes will also leave exit the fingerlings (fishes too small) and the trap be emptied of water when you remove it from water.

Then, it is necessary to provide a rope to remove the trap from the water.

(Haga algunos agujeros al aparato, para que cuando se eche al agua se hunda fácilmente. Yo usé mi soldador para estaño, pero un alambre caliente es lo mismo.

Step 4: STOP! WAIT!

Pardon, I'm forgetting the piece of bottle left on the table. It will serve to prolong the trap, so it has more capacity.

Step 5: Now Yes. Trying the Trap.

Now, go to a creek, a river, a lake, a lagoon, any place with water, BUT CONTAINING SMALL FISHES!!!

Put into the trap some little stones, so that it sink easily.

Put into the trap some pieces of bread, cookies, preferably greases.

Throw the trap to the water, not necessarily profound.

"Please be patient, this may take a while depending on" ... the fishes.

(Ahora, vaya a un arroyo, un río un lago, una laguna, cualquier lugar con agua, PERO QUE TENGA PEQUEÑOS PECES!!!
Ponga dentro de la trampa algunas piedritas, cosa que se hunda fácilmente.
Ponga dentro de la trampa algunas galletitas de grasa, o pan duro.
Arroje la trampa al agua, no necesariamente profunda.
"Por favor tenga paciencia, esto puede llevar un tiempo, dependiendo de"... los peces).

Step 6: Epilogue

Well, the truth was I was NOT CATCHING ANYTHING this time!!!!

But I must say in defense of the trap as follows:

1) I had no patience. ZERO patience. I am not a sportsman, I said it.

2) I didn't see any (live) fish in the vicinity.

Typically, every 10 or 15 minutes one remove the trap out of water, and there are 4 to 8 small fishes inside. In this way, in an beach afternoon you get, almost without work, several dozen of fishes to fry.

AN  EXCEPTIONAL CASE came 20 years ago: I put the trap in the Gualeguay river (Entre Rios, Argentina), I left it a good time, perhaps half an hour, and it was totally out filled with small catfish. When I say full, I mean FULL. There was not place for only one fish more. I had to disassemble the trap to remove the fishes inside. I guess that would be almost 2 kg. When I counted they, were 269! Again, it was a truly exceptional case, it was never repeated. Perhaps you will be the next...

(Bueno, el hecho es que NO PESQUÉ NADA!!! Pero debo decir algo en defensa de la trampa:
1. No tuve paciencia. CERO paciencia. No soy un deportista, ya lo dije.
2. No vi ningún pez -vivo- en la vecindad.

Típicamente, cada 10 ó 15 minutos uno casa la trampa del agua, y dentro hay 4 a 8 pececitos. De esta manera, en una tarde de playa se obtienen casi sin trabajo varias docenas de pececitos para freír.

UN CASO EXCEPCIONAL ocurrió hace unos 20 años. Puse la trampa en el río Gualeguay, (Entre Ríos, Argentina), la dejé un buen rato, quizás media hora, y al sacarla estaba totalmente llena de bagrecitos. Cuando digo llena, quiero decir LLENA. No había lugar para un solo pececito más. Tuve que desarmar la trampa para sacar los peces de adentro. Calculo que había casi 2 Kg. Cuando los conté, ¡eran 269! De nuevo lo digo, fue solo un caso excepcional, nunca se repitió. Tal vez Ud. sea el próximo...).
