I am a big Harry Potter fan and Have always wanted to be able to cast spells. Wouldn't it be cool to be able to knock someone out by saying a single word? Or how about being able to unlock a door without a key? Then I stumbled upon this instructable but, alas, I run Mac os x and not windows so I decided to make my own instructable for those Mac os x users out there who want to be able to cast spells on their computer, and use the technology for other.. more evil things.

Step 1: Materials

For this instructable you will need:

A computer running Mac Os X
A wand
and a little imagination

Step 2: Process

Picture of Process

1.) Boot up your computer.
2.) After your computer is up and running, go to system preferences.(Apple menu/System Preferences)
3.) In System preferences go to Speech.
4.) Turn Speech on.
5.) Make sure the "listen continuously with keyword" option is on and it is set to "Keyword is optional before commands
6.) After you have turned the speech on say "define a new keyboard command" then type in the keyboard shortcut you want to use as a spell, click ok then type in the spell name (e.g. "diffindo" for cut)

Then have a little fun
get out your wand, say the incantation (enunciate!), then wave your wand
If you do not have a wand then you want to check out this instructable

Step 3: Troubleshooting and Helpful Tips

I also wanted to be able to cast spells like "lumos" and "nox", but I wasn't able to because everytime I tried to enter the keyboard shortcut it would only make it brighter or darker.
So this is what I did:
In the Keyboard & Mouse option in System preferences I went to Keyboard Shortcuts.
In there I scrolled down to the bottom where the display features are.
I double-clicked on the keyboard shortcut for one and changed it
Then, I made a new "spell" with the old Keyboard shortcut
Then I changed the display Keyboard shortcut back to the original one
Then I did the same thing for the other

If you want to be able to shut down your computer with a spell go to System Prefereces/Keybord & Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts
From there click the plus on the bottom of the screen then enter the keyboard shortcut you want it to be then enter the exact name it is in the menu toolbar (capitals count)
then make it into a spell

I made a list of the Harry Potter spells and their uses as a reference (It will open in textedit but it will look confusing (it's supposed to be three separate columns)
please leave a comment; any suggestions for what spells you can use for what purposes

speak into your mic and say "define a new keyboard command," then a window will come up prompting you for the info. after you have told it what you want to say, click on the box beneath that and enter the keyboard shortcut of the action you want it to do.
