If you ever find a blown-out (retired) hornets' nest, take a look at the gorgeous paper those demons can make! This turned into a weird Instructable, but it was pretty cool playing with the stuff.

Step 1: Materials

Abandoned hornets' nest
Large (16"-18") balloon
Newspaper, torn into strips
White craft glue
String of LED lights
Craft wire
Wire cutters

Step 2: Step 1: Prepare the Materials

a. Blow up the balloon and tie it off. Set it into a large bowl to keep it stable while you cover it with the paper strips.
b. Tear newspaper into strips 1" wide and about 3" long. You won't need too many; you're only covering the top quarter of the balloon.
c. Mix 1/4 cup white craft glue into 1/2 cup water and mix well. Saturate the paper strips in the glue/water mix and apply in overlapping positions onto the balloon. Cover only about 4" down the balloon. The newspaper is going to block light, and the whole point is to create a translucent cover for the LED lights. You want enough newspaper to anchor the sheets of hornet paper, but not so much that the light can't get through.
d. Set the bowl and balloon outside to dry. Overnight is best; you want it completely dry before you apply the hornet paper.

Step 3: Step 2: Apply the Hornet Paper

a. Carefully separate sheets of the hornet paper. It's pretty brittle and breaks apart easily, so be gentle with it. Spread white craft glue on the dried newspaper.
b. Apply sheets of hornet paper, one at a time. Work slowly and hold the sheets to the glued area until they're set in place.
c. When the glue is dry, clip the balloon at the tied end, release the air, and remove (and throw away!) the balloon.

Step 4: Step 3: Insert the LED Lights

a. Coil the string of LED lights and secure the coils with wire.
b. Pull the plug through the hole at the top.

Step 5: Step 4: Hang It Up and Enjoy It

Find a place to hang your new light. Remember that this is a fragile light cover; a screened porch is perfect. At night it becomes a completely different experience!
