Introduction: How to Make Black Powder With Things You Can Buy Localy

I warn you now, I am not responsible for any accidents. Health and safety is a key issue. Also in the intro I do babble on so if you just want to make it, then skip the into. I do Apologise for the lack of photos.
As You may know, there are two types of main explosives. One is made of a HUDGE molecule like TNT and Nitrocellulose, which is very volatile and can degrade quickly. That is why I favour those ones that carry their own oxidiser.
As you may also know, Gunpowder is made of 3 ingredients.

Sulphur - To lower the ignition temperature and increase speed of combustion.

Carbon - To provide the primary fuel for the reaction.

Potassium nitrate - this is the oxidiser witch provides oxygen for the reaction to burn.

NOTE: Strictly speaking what I make isn't black powder
because for the reaction I use Sodium Nitrate Instead Of Potassium Nitrate.

Step 1: Getting

List of ingrediants:

25ml of Sulphuric Acid
5grams of sugar(Preferably ground)
5grams of Ground Suphur
40grams of ground Sodium Nitrate

Note the list below is based in England.
The shops elsewere may not exist.

The H2SO4 Came in the form of a very strong drain cleaner.

The ground sulphur was made for using in sulphur candels.

The NaNO3 was from A 'Nitrate Of Soda' package as a fertiliser.

Step 2: Preperation

Remember to ground up everything.

To prepare the carbon, mix the sulphuric acid and sugar place in a big beaker the carbon spilt over the top in my first attempt. The reason that this works is because Sulphuric acid is a VERY stron dehydrating agent part of sugar is water. it is in the name or the formula rather. When the acid comes in contact with sugar it takes the water away leaving carbon:
C12H22O11 --> 12C + 11H2O
when the reaction is complete (usually the next day) place it outside if you are in a rainy area or rinse with water. scrape the carbon off the stack and dry then crush. You now have your ingredients.

Now you can just mix all the ingrediants well. Now you are ready.

I personly dont like storing gunpowder. i store each ingrediant indervidually.

Have Fun!!
