In this instructable, I'll show you how to tie a square knot easily. In my point of view this is the fastest and most simple way out of many different ways to tie this useful knot. This knot is used to connect two pieces or rope or string. It is trustworthy but will NOT stand heavy weight.

Step 1: Left over Right

Take left end and put it over the right, then wrap it around the other side.
Small point: outside the US, this is called a reef knot.
Thank You! I have a buddy who is originally from England and he had no clue what I was talking about when I said "Square Knot".
In the UK, Scouts sometimes use a knot to tie their neckerchief. Some people call it a Friendship Knot, others call it a Square Knot because it is. <br> <br>See step 5: http://whatknot.tripod.com/knots/10knot.htm <br>
The way it works is the rope grips it's self and the other rope and adding pressure increases the strength of the knot by increasing friction. But a major rule of thumb is to never trust a single knot, so be sure to knot the working ends to the matching standing ends when using it for utility purpose.
The reason it does not withstand under weight I because the ropes MUST be the same and dry or else the ropes will come undone, especially with thicker rope
I love knot instructables. This is a good way to photograph it too, with two colors of rope.
I figured it would be easier to see what to do with two different colors
