For all you little rockers, the time has come to start your gar(b)age band with this Makedo project. No percussionist is complete without a tambourine, shakers and of course their lead guitarist so start gathering materials from your recycle bin and start jamming.

And if the pursuit of a life of rock and roll’ for your kid scares the bejesus out of you, how about a marching band, African drum group, classical orchestra or even nursery rhyme group? The musical possibilities using reclaimed materials are endless.

For inspiration, check out these very talented kids from a recycled orchestra in Paraguay playing very impressive renditions of Mozart from garbage! It’s an old favourite of ours. You can learn about their repurposing philosophy at Treehugger.com http://www.treehugger.com/culture/orchestra-paraguay-makes-beautiful-music-trash.html

Step 1: Find

Source materials from around your home. We’ve used disposable bowls and plates to make the drum shell and ribbon to decorate the rims.

Step 2: Punch

02punch.jpg
To create the drum shell, use the Makedo Safe-saw and punch a hole on the bottom of both disposable bowls.

Step 3: Connect

04connect.jpg
Position 1 bowl on top of the other and connect the 2 bowls with a Makedo Re-pin and Re-clip.

Step 4: Punch

03punch.jpg
To create the drum pattern on the outside, use the Makedo Safe-saw and punch 6 holes on the top and bottom outer rim of the base.

Step 5: Connect

05connect.jpg
Place a Makedo Re-pin and Re-clip on 4 of the 6 holes punched. These pins will allow us to weave the ribbon around to create the drum pattern. The remaining 2 holes will be used to connect the plates to the top and bottom of the drum.

Step 6: Punch

06punch.jpg
To cap the top and bottom of the drum, position the plates on the top and bottom of the base. Use the Makedo Safe-saw and punch 2 holes aligned with the 2 holes punched in the previous step.

Step 7: Connect

07connect.jpg
Connect the plate to the base with Makedo Re-pins and Re-clips.

Step 8: Thread

To complete your drum, weave the ribbon in a zig zag pattern twisting around each Makedo Re-pin.

Step 9: Complete

Your Makedo drum is now complete. Get creative by using different colours and patterns on your drum. You are now ready to start a beat and start a drumming parade with your friends.
