Introduction: Soup-Can Lantern

For this project you will need:
  • 1 Pillar candle- fit to your can
  • 1 empty 26 fl. oz. family sized soup can
  • About 1 1/2 feet of beading wire
  • Hand drill
  • A great pair of scissors or pliers
You can use a smaller can and substitute a tea light candle for the pillar candle!

Step 1: Step 1

After emptying the contents of your soup can, you will use the hand drill to make holes in the can so light can not only escape out the top of the can but also the sides. I drilled mine sporadically around the top 1 1/2 or 2 inches of the can but you can be creative with that part!

*Just make sure to only drill above where your candle will be.

Step 2: Step 2

Here's an example of how big your candle should be compared to your can!

Step 3: Step 3

Next place your candle into the can! Make sure you do this before you add your handle so that it will fit properly. Also try to get the candles circumference as close as possible to the cans.

Step 4: Step 4

After you have your candle in place, you can make the handle to your lantern. Take about 1 1/12 feet of the wire and fold it over twisting it together. This makes it stronger and thicker for you to hold onto. I did this several times until I got the handle to the desired length I wanted. Leave loose wire on either end for attaching it to the can.

Step 5: Finished Product

This is what my finished product looks like. Now you can make your very own soup-can lantern!
