Not sure if this has already been mentioned before, but I would like to make a comment on prizes only suited for the US. I have won a couple of prizes in the past, which I'm super happy about (part of why Instructables is so awesome) and some of those prizes included electronics. When I received the prizes (soldering station etc.) I was a bit bummed that it only worked on 110V. I had to buy a pretty expensive voltage converter, to be able to use the things I won. Since all contest are open for people from around the world I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm not sure if it is common for US households to have both 240V and 110V outlets, but at least in Europe we only have 240V. I can imagine that this is not always possible when selecting prizes, but maybe it is something where you guys can look into.A recent example would be the first prizes for the metal contest. It's a beautiful welder, but it only works on 110V. A voltage converter would cost around 300 euros/dollars. Miller also sells 240V models, so I would think those are more suited for an international contest.Please note I'm not complaining and still love everything you guys do, it's just a thought.

haha thanks, but did you see the spring on top of the arm? the upper eye bolt can slide through the bronze bushings and the spring pulls the string tight.

Thanks, It was definitely easier than I expected :). You just draw the template on two faces of a rectangular block. Cut out one side, keep all the pieces together, cut out the other side and you have a baby deer.

Well as I set in my intro, a hot wire foam cutter is nothing new. I focused on a great design and a lot of added features and that's what makes this Instructable original and hopefully inspiring.

Thanks! I'm not sure about the foam rubber though. Foam rubber is usually made from polyurethane and I don't think that it's suitable for hot wire cutting. You can adjust the wire temperature if you want to cut denser foams, but I haven't tested yet if there is a limit.

Awesome man! Looking good so far, I used a sanding disk made for metal (step 8 picture 3) to smooth out all the curves of the metal pieces. Good luck with the rest of the build, would love to see how it turns out!
Hi thank you for your comment! I do not completely agree with you about the hardness of the blade, without knowing the exact metal used in the blade it's hard to say anything about it's properties. This video discusses hardening of different kind of blades and also shows that carbide tipped blades can be hardened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJAKOtlJB48 See also my comment below, I definitely agree that standard HSS blades (not carbide tipped) are probably better to use! I think it would be really interesting to do some hardness testing of different blades at my university, but this will probably have to wait for a couple of weeks. Thanks again and have a nice day!
A non carbide tipped circular saw blade (table saw or cold saw) is probably best. These blades are made from high carbon steel and are a bit harder than carbide tipped blades.

Well it is pretty light, so the saw is mainly used for the heavy cutting of larger pieces and the hatchet for splitting smaller pieces into kindling. As a 'survival' axe it works very well, but if splitting large pieces of wood is the only thing you want to do, I would definitely make it larger and heavier.

Thanks, I wasn't sure about this either. As you can see in the final step, my hand fits around the handle nicely and can hook behind the head so to say. In this position you can saw very comfortably. Of course the main objective of this project was to combine 3 tools in to one :)!
Hi, thank you for the info. Depending on the type of saw blade you use, the steel is definitely hardened. Standard HSS blades (not carbide tipped) can be as hard as 64 HRC, the blade I used was carbide tipped and around 43 HRC. Not super hard but definitely 'hardened' (heat treated). Most files range from 40 - 65 HRC, so that's why I was able to file the steel a little bit (I mainly used the angle grinder). We will see how well the edge holds up, but during the tests I did it stayed pretty sharp :). Do you know the best method to give the blade an extra heat treat? Heat with a torch and oil quench maybe?
