How to Unclog a Blocked Toilet Without a Plunger
I cannot believe this worked! It is really incredible but I left it overnight and just checked, not only has it all cleared but it looked like the toilet bowl has been cleaned. Thank you thank you thank you amazing
Ps. I also created an account just so I could thank you. Hugely appreciated!
Our toilet was blocked for 2 days, plunger, water buckets.. tried everything nothing worked ! Found this and tried a water bucket and a lot of dishwashing liquid.. within 15 minutes it was back to normal and clearer and cleaner than before THANK YOU :)
I tossed some old pierogis down the toilet and they got stuck in the pipes, of course. The water was going down veryyyyy slowly, and if someone made poopoo it was just going to float around and spin in the toilet bowl forever. Before it got to that crisis level I took action. I found this article and gave it a try before running out to buy a plunger. Squeezed about a quarter bottle of dishwashing soup (maybe a half-cup?) and boiled up about 2 quarts of water. It was food, not toilet paper, that was my problem so I tried to get the water as close to boiling without it actually boiling. When the water level went down enough, I poured all the hot water in and waited. Repeated this 3 times in 15 minutes. After the third time, I sat down and started thinking about the plumber bill I was about to get tomorrow. It was during this moment of weakness when a loud, other-worldy belch came from the bathroom scaring me half to death. The pierogis had disappeared into the nether and my toilet was sparkling clean and functional again. Thank you greatly! - mgreb
You're truly a LIFE SAVER!I can't thank you enough!! - Kiani333
Giving this a try right now - seriously hope this works as I have no plunger. I didn't have a bucket either so I just filled my water bottle full of hot water and dumped in some shampoo and conditioner. Fingers crossed that this works and saves me from an embarrassing chat with my landlord.
I've been able to flush the whole time, but I can still see that certain things are not going down with the water. I waited 20 min and nothing happened. I just added some different shampoo and will walk away from it and try again later tonight.
HANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I am renting my place and they would have charged me a bomb to get it sorted. I just moved in amd dont have bleach. I squirted in half of a bottle of shower gel, and a few saucepans of tap hot water. Left it over night, and it drained!!! It didnt before. So i tested it with some more shower gel and filled it with more hot water, it took 2 mins and it cleared!!! Infact, left my toilet cleaner that it was before!Thabk you, you legend!
Also made an account just to thank you! Worked brilliantly! Just to add because it wasn't clear from the post: I did *NOT* have to force anything down with a plunger or flush. The whole thing just went "whoooop" all of a sudden all by itself. It did take a good 5-10 minutes before it did that though, and a constant generous supply of soap and warm water. Just be patient. It was safe to flush immediately after the blockage cleared. Thanks again! - tpapastylianou
So happy that this worked! I was actually quite skeptical because things like this usually are not easily fixed in my house. We tried plunging but it didn't work. I really thought that I was going to have to call the plumber. Yay! I didn't have to! I used about a half a cup of dawn and poured about a pot full of hot tap water in the toilet, and about 20 minutes later it unclogged all by it's self and I heard the gurgling and it was clear. Whew! Thank you all for all of your comments. Definitely glad I tried this. - Darlin12
Brilliant!Works in Australia too!!Again, bloody brilliant!!
Thanks so much .Toilet blocked for several hours and had tried Mr Muscle and bleach all to no avail .In desperation looked on line and found this brilliant tip ..Worked perfectly ...Two kettles of water and Fairy liquid did the job in about five mins ...
Thank You so much!!!!My son & I with tried plunging to no avail. 25 minutes after squirting dish soap & baby shampoo then about 2 gallons of water my son was able to plunge it right down. Didn't want to try flushing as it was already close to the rim.
Another success story!! After plunging until I thought my arm would fall off with no success, I tried a quick internet search before calling the plumber - and thought I might as well try it. After an hour, the toilet flushed - yay!! Used Dawn and about 4 quarts of hot water. Will remember this trick for the future!! - JillS56
Thanks so much.I used this tip and plunged simultaneously as i poured the shampoo water into it.Surprisingly it all went down within seconds. Many thanks for the idea. You saved me a lot of money. - Lade2004in
Hi ..Created my account to Thank you...It is a life saver. Worked like a pro...Some Head and Shoulders ( shampoo) mixed in a cup of warm water and after a few seconds 1 more cup of warm water and I closed the lid ...After 4 hours FLUSHED , Can't imagine that it just went away and unclogged clearly ..Literally saved me from a big embarrassment at my cousin's house .. God bless the owner of this idea...
Best thing ever on the internet! Plunging wasn't working. I searched online. Followed the instructions on this post...VOILA! I used 3/4c Dawn liquid soap and about 64oz of hot tap water. I poured the soap and water in at the same time. Let it sit for a couple hours...crossed my fingers and flushed. PERFECT! No additional plunging was needed. Thank you!
I created an account just to say thank you for this life saver. I've been plunging the toilet for about an hour and was about to break down into tears when I decided to google up a solution. This page popped up and saved me from the fuss and embarassment. Many many thanks, keep up with the good work.
THIS WORKS LIKE A CHARM!Was at work, got a call from my wife around 11:00 am that she had 'done' the thing!. She used kitchen-grade paper towels to wipe-clean the floor of washroom and kept throwing them in wc, without flushing them down as she went on.Lo and behold! She discovered it when she 'tried' to flush the bowl!To add to misery, one of the kids from the guest-family 'added' the stuff! She had been trying multiple times since then until about 6:30 pm when I got home and 'took over the charge'. Based on the fact that those towels were 'kitchen-grade' and kind of 'proudly re-usable', (colourful) water level did not lower at all. Since, there was not much room for me to try plunging up and down as it would have caused water to overflow, I let it stand as soon as I was able to decrease the level by few inches, with the thought about `googling` this issue. And as the picture shows, this was first "APPEALING" search result from Google!Appealing in the sense that I visit 'instructables.com' almost everyday and have faith in what gets posted.Firstly added about a cup of the "sunlight" dishwasher liquid in the water that was already there and tried gentle plunging for about 5 minutes so that it can work down the pipe as water was still near the top. When went back after about 10 minutes, found the level to have gone way down!Added about 1/2 cup of 'head & shoulders' shampoo and half bucked of tap-hot water and gave another gentle plunging 'massage' for hardly 2-3 minutes and it just flushed right in front of my very eyes, that were tired of seeing the 'jam'. One can imagine the relief this brought after this 7 hour long ordeal... AND I could not take my turn in visiting the `venue` without posting this comment!THANKS A MILLION! What a brilliant idea!
I was desperate ... it's Saturday, we only have one bathroom, it would NOT plunge so I tried this. It didn't seem like it was working so about an hour later I tried one last plunge and it opened right up! Thank God!
super clogged with 'clay' loo! (Thanks to one of my son's - though both deny responsibility . . . ) Plunging for England and a zillion flushes wouldn't sort :( Googled this, worked first flush after leaving the hot water and Asda's own brand washing up liquid for just 20 minutes. Soon relieved, would have been super embarrassing to get plumber/dyno rod? Thank you very much :) x
it worked!! thank you so much, saved me from an awkward situation with my new aptmates - HiguraN
I used this method for the first time, and it works better than using a plunger or a wire coat hanger. Plus, you don't have to touch the water. - RoyK31
I tried the baking soda and vinegar and then the dish soap. It improved but still didn't flush correctly. As I started the dishwasher I realized that the dishwasher detergent or pod in my case has enzymes and bleach to break down the food particles.Threw in dishwasher pod and hot water and left the hose. 8 hours later it flushed perfectly.
I am so thankful to you for this wonderful tip... U saved me from the brunt of my Father in law... Thanks a ton.. This works absolutely wonderfully... Tried everythn posibl before bt with this I am so relieved...
Worked like a charm. Totally hassle and expense free. Thanks! - NoraB14
what should i do?? i did the instruction even if it seems like no tisue causes the clog - akichiro
Works like a dream! Thank You! - MarkM422
I wish I'd taken photos!! Seriously, we tried everything! I cannot BELIEVE how much time and effort we wasted before finding this!! Where have you been my whole life! - Yeeunah
I had a huge, steaming American sized constipated dump this morning that was the consistancy of clay. I tried bleach, liquid plumber and hot warer and it was clogged for hours and kept other family members away from the war zone. It was like a nightmare in there. Then 8 hours later we fond this trick and the first biucket of dish soap started the process of breakong down the fecal matter, then the 2nd bucket opened it right up. Wasted 13 bucks on draino thoughts of fighting it with a plunger and a possible embarrassing, emegency plumber call.
Thank you so much, it totally worked after a hour and a few doses of Dishwashing liquid, conditioner and hot water. At 2AM in New Zealand a Plumber would be very expensive snd near impossible to find.
Used Pine O Clean and it worked on the second top up! Thank you so much!
I actually put a little bleach, powder laundry soap and shampoo in there and after 15 mins, I flushed... it took a moment but it went down! And this wasn't a tp overload... lol lots of bubbles after too!
Yep worked for me too. I did as instruceted and then lwt it sit. an hour or so later my husband went in and did a little plunging and gone. Perfect!!! Nice clean bowl to boot. - EstherD9
I never ever write reviews . But in this case a sincere thank you I tried most everything. Came across this on Internet. It worked within 45 seconds. Toilet was unblocked. - MikeW241
Omg! Fantastic advice! Was about 2 call out a plumber! So glad i saw this! ??xx
Wow I used this method using dish washing liquid and soapy warm water, left if for 15 minutes. Saw it slowly going down and thought this wasn't going to work. Went to bed thinking I'll call the plumber in the morning, about to go sleep then all of a sudden I hear a loud noise coming from the toilet. Go out and all the water was gone, just left with a soapy bowl! Flushed again and flushed normal! Just as I thought of giving up after a long time of work! Thank you!
Wow. can't believe it worked. I just put in a lot of dishwashing soap and when I flushed it, it's normal again.

OMG - This method worked and I was about to call a Plumber but I found this and after adding the Dawn/hot water mix, letting it sit for 45 min. and adding more hot water over an hour or so, I plunged a few times and then snaked one more time and Magic happened - my toilet was finally unclogged. I was bound and determined to Not resort to calling a Plumber. Before I found this method, I was repeatedly plunging, snaking and flushing and nothing was working. So glad I found this! Thank you!! - CinS1
Recipe: In Toilet bowl: 3/4 cup dishwashing liquid (Palmolive). Add 2 quarts hot tap water. Wait at least 15 minutes. Use plunger with flange pulled out. Toilet works again. Many thanks for a great tip! - HermanG8
IT WORKED!Before I used this method, I tried flushing it over and over, but it nearly flooded a few times. I then tried this, and waited 30 minutes or so. It didn't work at first, but after a few flushes, the Lord gave my toliet a chance and it all flushed down!
Tried a plunger, didn't work (albeit, it was a cheap one). Tried a snake, didn't work. Then I found this tip. Used 3/4 cup generic dish detergent and a bucket of hot water. Didn't even have to wait. As soon as the hot water went down, the toilet was unclogged. Thank you for the awesome tip.
This was magic! Used 3/4 cup Dawn and hot tap water and let it sit one hour. Didn't even have to use plunger! Thanks!
It was so bad, I was about to call a plumber. To my amazement, Dawn [3/4 c.], a quart of hot water, and a 45 minute wait worked like a charm on my toilet in my 46 year old home!
TonyP72 made it!(author)Replya few seconds agoAnother DAWN victory ... half bottle Dawn and 4 gallons boiling hot water. Plunged half dozen times to mix things up. After a couple hours, the clog was gone and the toliet drained clean. Amazing.

Not too sure if this method works if the clog is too large. In my case it did not work - and I finally had to use a plunger (£4.99 from Robert Dyas if you are in the UK).
What size cord / thread should you use with each different sized beads? For example, I plan on using 8mm beads with mine, what dimension of cord should I use?
Dawn dish washing soap and hot water did the trick.. Thank you
It worked! We have 2 young boys who seem to love TP and tend to clog the toilet from time to time. This time a plunger was not working and I was not happy. Poored the dawn soap in them the hot water. I waited a couple mins and plunged it and it cleared right up! Thank you for saving us from calling someone out.
I used a plunger afterward, but it worked like a charm!!
Nothing else was working for me. This worked like a charm! Used about 3/4 cup of Dawn and a few big pots of hot water from the tap. Thank you!
Well... I won't go into the colorful or gory details, but let suffice that I had the following results: 1. I had already flushed, plunged, cleaned up messes, and did them again about five times. Result: more mess and no movement (excuse the pun). 2. I squirted about a half-cup of Dawn dish soap in it, and repeated instruction #1 again. Same result but very foamy.3. My wife suggested I check the internet to see if there is a non-snake method (snakes just made messes for me with horrible after-effects). So I surfed and found this site.4. I put hot tap water into a 3-gallon bucket while squirting another 3/4 cup of Dawn just for blasts. Result: Kah-Blub! it went down and other than some residual foam, thanks to the Dawn makers, it was a 100% success. Thanks to whoever came up with the idea!! I claim nothing because even though it Dawned on me to use the biodegradable soap, the hot water did not seep into my mind.I have joined the club and bookmarked the site. Great place!
Thank you so much for the easy to follow guide.I only needed to use some universal cleaner and some hot water from the shower once and flush the toilet 2-3 times.
I had to fill the bowl twice with hot water, and plunged it a few more times, but it worked!
It works! I was starting to worry after the first time but second time worked like a charm! Thank you so very much ?
thank you so much, this worked brilliantly, so relieved
works great, but I did have to plunge a little bit. originally the plunger by it self would not work
No bullsh*t, it worked. I highly recommend this over anything else. Especially if you hate plunging other people's sh*t and piss like I do. - JoelF29
Tried it today....it worked!! So relieved..thanks. - sweetie_haute89
Yep, this just worked for me as well. I used about two pots of very hot water and some dish soap, left it for about 45 minutes. The water level was lowered, then I tried flushing, and at first it seemed like it wasn't working and the bowl was getting pretty full and I closed the lid, but when I opened it again a minute later it was all gone and the second flush was normal. Perfect! - EricS201
It really does work OMG Thanks for saving me money.
It really works!!! Thank you ! You helped my a lot!!! Hurra! - PaulinaN4
Awesome, had been struggling for an hour and made no progress, tried this and BANG! the blockage was gone!Sincerely Thankyou, I was about to call a plumber. - scifisi
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm in Ireland and it did the trick! - topchicken
Ok so I had little faith in this but this was my last resort because not even the master plunger that uses those CO2 bottles to push the clog out worked. So i got some dawn, squeezed the bottle around the toilet 3 times and dumped on a whole pitcher of hot water but instead of waiting for it to "marinate" I got my old plunger and plunged that baby for a good 3 minutes straight and the clouds of heaven magically broke out and BOOM! The water flushed down! So Im very happy that this worked!!!! Especially on the 1st try!! - NatalieD30
Yeah it worked after 5hrs of buying snake and plunger but at the end I only spent $6 ($1 dishwashing soap & $4 master plunger from Walmart )although I used real hot water and used master plunger and it worked like a miracle
OMG!!!!!! IT WORKS!!! I had a really bad clog and try this several times but it worked. Dawn dish washing liquid (4 times around the toilet bowl) + hot water, let this sit until the water goes down the toilet, use plunger if needed. Repeat if needed. Don't give up. This REALLY works!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!
I finally dared to flush it and it spilled a little bit out of the bowl (horror!) and then 2 minutes later - WHOOSH it flushed!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! - RebeccaP48
THANKS SO MUCH IT WORKED THANK YOU - TonyaR10
I am confused.................okay I took out as much water as I could out of the toilet, then put in half a bottle of shampoo and then hot water from the shower.....tried plunging but nothing........I'ts been 4 hours.......... People say they had to do it 2 or 3 x's? Does this mean that they had to re-empty the toilet and do it all over again? I am afraid to flush it as it is so high up in the bowl............heeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllp (please) - RebeccaP48
It's not working for me :( this is the third time trying this method
Thanks for the great advice, it worked like a charm on the first try. - guamgirl7
Thanks thanks thanks!! Had to be patient as the toilet took a long time to drain each time but worked on the second attempt. Two hours after blocking the toilet with a big handful of tissues after a crying jag I am now a free woman! Not crying now - very happy indeed. Thanks for this brilliant method xx - Silver Screen Suppers
I had to try this more than a couple of times but i was glad i didn't give up coz soon the clog gave up ;)Thank you! If you don;t have a plunger this is definitely worth trying.
Thank you!! I thought this was too simple to be true, but I had no plunger (and I dread using plungers, anyway), so I decided it was worth a try. And it worked! Yay!!! I'll know what to do next time, too.
