Simple and effective, well done. I would be interested to see a solution like this that could be used by people with limited hand strength, like those with severe arthritis. Adding a bigger knob might work, maybe a 3d printed one? That would be cool to see.

Thanks! I've made a few updates, seeing as I wrote this over six years ago. There are tons of options that have opened up for people sensitive to gluten.
Taking Leatherwork Further
The first thing to understand is how a power supply circuit is built. For the most part, that's what the charger is, a power supply for the battery. You just want it to be a power supply for the tool. I had expected to have to remove the power supply parts and wire them together. It just worked out that I didn't have to. Look at your circuit board and trace out what each lead goes to. If you figure out how it works, you might be able to reduce the board, since the power handling is the first thing that circuit has to do, so it might all be in one place on the board.http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/worksheets/basic-ac-dc-power-supplies/
Thanks! I think that the increasing ability and dropping price of lithium batteries is slowly making this kind of thing unnecessary. Still, it's nice to have as an emergency back up.
You're welcome! Tell us how it comes out?
