In order: A Nexus 5, not an iPhone.Charge percentage gain cannot be answered meaningfully because the phone was in heavy screen-on use the whole time. It gained a little but mostly the MintyBoost was just barely keeping up with the drain. (That's what I meant in the original post when I said the original 2-cell version couldn't keep up; sorry I didn't make that clearer.)Was I concerned about heat? Well, yeah, that's why I posted about it. :) When electronics start to smell like that, you know something's being overloaded. It still smells burnt, and it hasn't been used in months. It worked, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't last very long.I'm guessing OP does not report having this problem because he's using rechargeable cells, which have lower output than a fresh set of regular alkaline. - dwasifark
I am a novice and would like to build this for use with my students. Is there a possibility of obtaining a more simplified wiring diagram to mimic the build? i have been trying to zoom in on the circuitry but was having dificulty.
what are you using to recharge the batteries? Solar, wall charger, permanent magnet?
There are plenty of ways to do a lockout system that does not use a software loop. Those rely on more complicated electronics. You can find many examples by doing a web search for "lockout button system schematic".
Great project and thanks for posting! I have a question about the for loop. Technically, it's still possible for someone to press the 1 button while the for loop is probing pins 2 and 3. Then someone could press the 4 button and cause the lockout. The 4 button would be locked out as the winner, even though the 1 button was pressed first. I hope that's clear. Now, of course I realize that we are dealing with milliseconds per loop cycle to probe all four buttons, but I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts about how a truly accurate lockout could be achieved and if there were an exact tie, that could be indicated as well. I'm sure it would be a complex thing to achieve, but imagine that millions of dollars or even lives were at stake...
I started with these instructions and built a version for two teams of four. Works like a charm. I think I used all but one on the I/O pins on the Arduino UNO.
