Another thing to consider when using offcuts of glass is that they may be rather old - because workshops clear them out infrequently. Cutting and "nibbling" art glass is not easy until you gain some experience, and cutting aged art glass is even harder. Practice cutting curves and straight lines in fresh 4mm window glass to give yourself a better chance of avoiding wastage once you do get your hands on some more interesting glass.
+1 as regards the mosaic - do it on a horizontal board, then hang it. You could recess it into the plaster (or plaster up to it) if you want it to look like it was done in situ.If there are no stained glass suppliers anywhere near you then you could perhaps consider painting your design using glass paints instead. It won't look much like the real thing though.
If you want to use epoxy, there are plenty around (in the UK at least) with working times well beyond 45 minutes. With standard Araldite the parts are repositionable for 80 minutes and the joint won't be properly set for about 8 hours.

Well, you need something to wrap the yarn around, and it should be washable and fairly sturdy. As the intro says, curtain rings will work, or you could try cutting a doughnut shape from a piece of stiff plastic.
Thanks, much appreciated.
My pleasure, glad you liked it.
Yes, I think it needs a shiny fabric to show off the texture, but I'd like to try with velvet too.

I will definitely give it a go. The small sized bits are always the ones that get broken so it's great if you can get away with using a nail instead.
WUVIE, Brittdub and Saeirin, I'm glad you all like these buttons. Thanks for commenting.
I'm wondering how a nail can drill a hole, but I will try it some time.
I made something similar a few years ago. I don't have any welding gear, nor a tame student who happens to be a champion welder, so I fixed the flue (bought from Machine Mart) in place using fire cement, which worked fine. It hasn't come loose even though I stuff brushes up it once a year to sweep the chimney. You can't see the flue in the photo, unfortunately, it's hidden by the fireplace canopy. But this is proof that you can make one of these gas cylinder stoves with nothing more sophisticated than an angle grinder and a drill. Mine relies on the gaps around the doors for combustion air. It's not the most efficient device, but it's better than an open fire and efficiency isn't too much of an issue if you have a free supply of wood.
