This worked great, it took me several tries. Here is the rocket I'm building.

I make slings all the time! your instructable is pretty good, I've used basicly the same method for making jute and cotton slings.if your interested, I wrote an instructable my self on a different (lighter/pocket size) sling. I like how you tapered yours on the release end, I will have to try that sometime. I noticed you used 325 cord for the main braid, have you used regular 550 cord before?

Do this plane can do a 180 turn without banking in a half circle? This plane looks really nice, it must be an eye catcher when it's flying.
All of this is true, however-- I was trying to make this as low key, affordable, and easy as possible. I would have kept a cup of water with me, but I had no problems going slow and taking my time to prevent over heating. After throwing this at wood, rock, dirt, dropping it on concrete, and other random abuse. I can say there is not really a need for heat treatment processes to be done. For unknown reasons, this mystery steel has survived my testing. If you are an over achiever, and would like to go as far as heat treating your steel, feel free to get what ever kind of steel you would like to use for this project. My instructable's purpose is simply to lay the groundwork for anyone interested in making the bo-shuriken. Thank you for your response, and happy throwing!
So, if you get your steel rod from a big box store, you probably won't know what type of steel alloy that you are getting. It's probably going to be a mild steel (low carbon) that you can use for pins, threaded bolts.Probably cold rolled which does harden the steel somewhat, but it's never going to resist bending like a good tool or spring steel. If you are grinding the tip of your spike and let it get too hot (can happen quickly on those grinders), you are going to ruin any hardening from the manufacturer. At the very least, keep a cup of water handy and cool down the spike between grinds. If it changes color, you have let it get too hot.In general, you can heat up the tip and quench it, but every type of steel has a recommended process for how hot and what to use to quench (oil, water, the blood of your...). Order it online and you can specify what alloy of steel you want and check from the supplier or manufacturer what the recommendations are. Here's a materials sheet for O1 tool steel: https://www.speedymetals.com/information/material9... as an example

so, why exactly does the speaker have to be air tight?
I have experimented with different length to BB ratios but for the size of straws and weight of the BBS I found the size in the instructable to be best suited for convienent purposes. For instance, 9 is divided evenly by 3 so we use the entire straw that is 9 inches long. When I have time I'll experiment some more. Your thought on using different liquids is intriguing, I will have to try that. Maybe it would make a good density experiment that uses a solid in a liquid, and not just a liquid on a liquid? Thank you for taking the time to comment, I like hearing others ideas.
It might be interesting to try adding a couple more divers with slightly different sizes and 9 or 11 BBs, like those Galileo thermometers. Another possibly interesting variation might be filling the bottle partly with oil, so the movement of the diver is limited (what for? oh just a different look, kind of neat stopping before it goes all the way). Maybe another fluid that doesn't mix with water could provide a limit at the other end.
That's the book I got the information from, it's a great book.
did you know this is how reinforced concrete was fist made? someone decided to try concrete in place of clay but they broke easy, so he used steel wire to hold it together better.Turns out, steel and concrete auctually bond to get as well.Looks great!
I really like this, I'm going to try to make one out of wood and give it a good finish. I think that if I make the square into a rectangle I can make it fit one way in each hole. Either way, this old dog of a toy just learned some new tricks. Thank you!
Thanks Zeke. I should have known! - grayl

This is great! I remember making one of these when I was a kid. Thank you for sharing these steps. Will make this with my kids sometime! :) - seamster
BBS are small round projectiles fired from a BB gun.
