The motor itself is being powered by three 6 V lantern batteries. The Arduino is receiving power through the USB port of the computer (although, it would have been possible to power the arduino with a battery, too).This motor was not originally meant to do anything really practical (more of just an experiment). If I wanted to do some kind of useful work, I would need to make some modifications to it.
You see how the electromagnets stick out from the tee connectors? The foam is what's holding them in place. Without it, they would just fall out.
