    Plastic Repairs (Gas Tank Example)

It is CRITICAL to know what polymer is being discussed for repair. Polyethylene is referred to as PET-G as in this article. BUT chemical polymers like 2-part epoxy resin + amine hardener cannot be repaired with heat. Polyester resin is polymer made with catalyst of methyl ethyl ketone solvent containing benzoyl peroxide-- which cannot be repaired with heat: But both can be glued with their original polymer. ABS polymers can be repaired by supercleaning (90% rubbing alcohol) and heating the cleaned surface to add a smooth patch.. I have no idea what "hard plastic' means. PTFE refers to teflon which cannot be glued. Below I see "Slimy-type plastic"--What? Do you mean PET-G like milk bottles? Note-- I built gasoline tanks for my custom car in 1975 using fiberglass an...

Note-- I built gasoline tanks for my custom car in 1975 using fiberglass and polyester resin. The tank worked great for years, until I put 10% ethanol gasoline in it....My tank started leaking but had already dissolved the tank enough to jam up the VW valve guides and bend my valve stems. Stupid!

  • Making Dimensional Recycled HDPE Stock for Projects

I bought some recycleable 55 gallon food drums recently for $15 each. They still contained about a gallon of crystal-clear high fructose corn syrup each. You cannot get plastic more food-safe than that.

WEST MARINE G/flex glue was new to me this summer, when I first heard of it. I tried many times over the years to glue HDPE, PVC and ABS plastic. Melting, flaming, welding- with lousy results. It now looks like high quality HDPE parts can be glued resulting in quality joints for quality projects. NOTE: cleaning and brief flaming is required for proper surface prep: This is NOT epoxy or polyurethane glue.------From an Ad: "Repair plastic canoes, kayaks and inflatables made from HDPE, LDPE, ABS, PVC or polycarbonate plastic with the contents of WEST SYSTEM's Plastic Boat Repair Kit. This kit features plastic-friendly G/flex epoxy, and is assembled with the do-it-yourselfer in mind. Size Markings for Wrenches and Sockets

STUPID RONALD REAGAN. STUPID STUPID STUPID. We had this conversion to metric well underway, back when the USA had a machine tool industry. And a stupid cowboy actor ruined this industry forever and badly damaged America's impact on the world. The guy is dead now, and there was nothing constructive or positive about this one person's whim.

Sun & bug lotion: one simple solution

Research scientists determine actual chemical structures of mosquito repellents, then synthesize analogs (similar structures), then test them in legitimate bioassays against particular insects in controlled lab tests. This is called "discovery". And that is exactly what was done for DEET, ethylhexanediol, 6,12, and older repellents during World War II.. It was "discovery". Drugs are discovered the same way.

Sun & bug lotion: one simple solution

I was stating some scientific facts, not opinions. Scientific facts are sometimes at odds with opinion, but this does not change facts. Pregnant women and possibly pregnant women should protect themselves against mosquito bites. If people are out-of-doors and have been exposed to Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito bites there is a good chance they they are carrying the ZIka, dengue, orWest Nile virus. You or your loved one could get it. This is how epidemics occur. Do not allow this to happen.

Sun & bug lotion: one simple solution

I worked 40 years at USDA in the labs where mosquito repellents are discovered and tested for effectiveness and safety. DEET was found in 1954 by USDA entomologists and chemists (like me). There had been continuous testing of more than 25,000 compounds as effective repellents during WWII. DEET has been used safely in billions of doses since then. It is stinky and does melt some plastics but it is effective for 7 hours after a single treatment. Please do not put a quart on your baby: people have done that. DEET was adapted by the US Army because it was 100% effective for 7 hours. A recent publication by University of Florida confirmed these findings, showing again that natural light oils like lemongrass oil are effective for only about 30 minutes. DEET is excellent protection aga...

DEET is excellent protection against Zika vectors like Aedes species and Culex species and the Asian Tiger mosquito. Personally, I like using non-stinky 7% picardin, now available in North America. Please do NOT let potential Zika, dengue, or chikungunya vector mosquitoes bite you because you are too careless to use an effective repellent. Please protect your unborn children from horrible microcephaly: sadly, it lasts a very long lifetime.
