Diffuse or direct bulb light for an area. Answered

Say that you had a 5W led and you wanted to light a small room, would it be better to use a bulb with a clear / no dome or one with a diffuse / frosted dome?

Would there be a big difference between the two?

Problem with an LED is the light comes out in a fairly narrow beam. Which is why LED light bulbs use multiple LEDs to offer light across all angles. Best you can do with a single LED is to use a reflestor to help spread the lgiht around.

Yes. Or try something a little different. Instead of the LED sitting inside the cone like you see on flash lights. Maybe shinning down on top of a reflective cone with similar design on the outside of the cone. So that the light is dispersed outward rather than focused like the cones tend to do. Then wrap a diffusing layer around the whole setup.

Is this theoretical or has it been done before?

I was looking at the specs of some of the led's and they have viewing angles of 120-135 degrees. Would the angle have an effect on the reflector that should be used?

The wider the viewing angle the better it spreads light over an area. The reflector will help to concentrate the light. With that wide of viewing angle the a difusing lens should be all you need.

The first may focus the light. The second would be a good option. You'll just have to play around with some options and go with what works best for you.
