Intro: A Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Halloween

Steve and I decided this Halloween we would dress as beloved game piece characters Red Rocker and Blue Bomber from Mattel’s Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em Robots.

The costumes are constructed out of heavy cardboard (approximately 30 feet each robot), pieced together with packing tape (12 rolls) and reinforced with hot glue.Each robot stands an impressive 7 ½ feet tall and weighs 35 pounds.

Complete with elbow and knee joints, the robot’s arms are connected with a pvc swivel “joint” to give full range of motion.The legs are free standing.

A viewing window is made in the torso to allow for ventilation and sight, since our heads are in the torso of the robot.Painted screen covers the window to make it obscure.Also, to make the costume more accessible for partyingJ, we were even able to include a cup holder for our drinks and holders for our cameras inside of the torso.

The robot’s head needed to be as authentic as possible, so with the use of an expandable hollow closet rod, springs, magnets and catches, an effective jab to the opponent’s jaw results in the head springing up, just as the original toy’s action design.We also added battery-operated red and blue police beacons to give a cool lighting effect from each head.

The robots are “painted” with red and blue colored duct tape (11 rolls each).The tape creates a colorful plastic dimension to the character.Rubber super bouncy balls (50) were cut in half, spray painted and hot glued in place to create the “rivets”.

After practice with walking, dancing and some choreographed boxing moves, we’re ready to Trick-or-Treat and enjoy all of the parties possible……

I love this costume, but I don't quite know how to make the head mechanism work. Can you go into more detail on how to make the head pop up and be able to get it back down?

Those were done so amazingly well! I just love how the finished costumes look! So much like the Rock em Sock em Robots!
