Intro: Aaahh!! Real Monsters! Ickis & Oblina

My girlfriend and I decided to go for a 90s kid throwback costume this year. Ickis and Oblina from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters! These were 100% home-made costumes, and not as difficult as they look!

STEP 1: Sketching and Sculpting

First thing you always have to do is draw the shapes! Figure out how to break down the geometry and how to scale the proportions to a human frame.

This year we used sculpting clay to make 3-D models, which we then cut in half and flattened out to get the patterns we needed.

STEP 2: Cutting Foam Pieces

Next stop: Wal-Mart! We bought sheets of bedding foam, measured out our shapes and drew them on. We cut them out using an Exacto knife and glued the pieces together using a hot glue gun. To create the 3-diminsionality from a 2-dimensional sheet, we cut triangular darts into the head pieces and glued them together.

STEP 3: Spray Painting!

Lots of spray paint from Wal-Mart to get that cartoon color!

STEP 4: Testing/Finishing Touches

Added teeth using cardboard, glued the head pieces together with hot glue, and attached everything using wire hangers for reinforcement. My girlfriend stitched together her unitard herself, and I bought some burgundy tights for my legs and arms. For my shoes I glued a pair of sneakers into the big foam ones I made, stuffed them with bed foam scraps, and sealed the bottom with a cardboard sole. Later I added some skateboard grip tape for traction.

STEP 5: Complete!

We went to the Village Halloween Parade in NYC, and I made it onto the local news coverage!

Tons of fun and all for less than $100 each!

Would you be interested in selling these? We're looking for great costumes to wear to children's hospital this season. These would be great.
The costumes did take a bit of damage--nothing some glue and spray paint couldn't fix, though.

I'm not sure if we're willing to part with them, as they did take a lot of time and energy to create, but make us an offer!
Didn't want to leave you hanging. We are going through a tragedy with my nefew. We Will not be needing costumes anymore. Thank you
So we really couldn't go higher then 250$ to buy them but maybe you are into the renting idea?
Understandable. I normally make our costumes but health reasons are stopping that this year. Let me talk to my husband to see what we can offer. Maybe if you don't want to part with them we could rent them for the month and then return them? Don't know if you'd be into that.

I love this so so so so so so so so much.

OMG thank you SO much for making this! I've been joking with my parents for years to dress up as olbina but I couldn't possibly think of a way to make it really work xD

omg, try making a wad of guts for oblina like for when she used to turn herself inside out! xD

Lol!!! I like it... old school.

Very fun costume. I laughed when I saw these. I love that you did this together. You really nailed it.

nice job guys did a great job keeping the foam smooth and well shaped (very hard to do) good job.

Just found out no ones been able to see the vid of my costume "Ghost rider on fire driving into parking lot" try my instructable pg but here . Tell me what you think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZySf9iTBc_o

These are so great!

Just so I'm clear, did you cut and flatten your clay models, then trace the patterns onto paper? And then those patterns were later blown up to the correct size?

Thanks Ashley!

Yes, that's correct. For Ickis' headpiece, I just opened the mouth and flattened the shape out onto a piece of paper, then traced the shape. I used the distance between my shoulder and my neck as a starting measurement and scaled the size up from there. Once I had the proper measurements, I drew the shape out onto the bed foam and cut it out. It wasn't an exact scaling, because clay is so malleable, but it was close enough to work.

You guys are amazing! This was one of my favorite shows growing up :D

Thanks Jessy! They were a lot of fun to make.
