Intro: Bib Clips for Instant Disposable Bibs

Feeding a baby is messy business. It's not unusual for my son to wind up with more food on his shirt than in his mouth.

At home we use lots of cloth bibs (including some cute bow tie bibs his grandmother made him) but we're planning some long road trips this summer and we'll only have so much room for dirty laundry.

I was wondering what to do when feeding him on the road, when I thought of the disposable bibs they use in dentists' offices.

After rummaging through my sewing and craft supplies, I was able to whip up my own bib clips in under 10 minutes.

Now we can make a bib out of paper towel or any napkins we pick up on our way! The messy napkin can be tossed and the clips reused at the next meal.

At home we can also clip on a facecloth or towel if his bibs are all in the wash.

STEP 1: Materials

You'll need:

  • Ribbon (I found these cute rolls of ribbon in the dollar bin at a craft store)
  • Clips (I used suspender clips that I had in my box of sewing notions, but you could use any kind of clips including alligator clips, hair clips or even binder clips)
  • Needle and thread / sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins

STEP 2: Cut

Cut approximately a foot of ribbon.

STEP 3: Pin and Sew

Put one end of the ribbon through the loop of a suspender clip. Fold over the end and pin it down.

Sew it together and then repeat with the other end.

STEP 4: Finished!

Your bib clips are done!

Pack it in your diaper bag so you'll have it handy for your next bib emergency.

These bib clips would make great handmade gifts for busy moms or dads with messy kids!

Brilliant ! I wish I'd thought of this when mine were in bibs!

I have a set of "bib clips" made from two alligator clips and 18 inches of pull chain from a ceiling fan. Keep it in my car or travel bag. Just pick up any napkin (or cloth I keep in car), put the chain around my neck and instant shirt protector.

I have one in the office made from two binder clips and a longer chain. Just run the chain through one of the clip arms on each clip and connect the ends. I keep it in my desk for those meals at the desk. No more stained shirts...

Handsome young man! enjoyed the pics.

Neat idea!

I am against disposable things (to a point) and I'm glad that you mentioned using a rag when you have the possibility of laundry close by. That was my first thought when I saw the clips.

I need those for me, LOL. Everytime I do not put a napkin on the front of my shirt, I spill and stain it.

Just stumped upon your idea. I have a travel coming. This is going to be handy! Voted for you.

Very good idea. Simple, useful, and low cost.
