Bubble Wrap Cosmetic Bag or Clutch

Intro: Bubble Wrap Cosmetic Bag or Clutch

My neighbor moved last summer and she gave me some green bubble wrap. She asked me what I was going to use it for and naturally I said:  "instructables  I think it would make a cute clutch or cosmetic bag!" I just did not know how I was going to pull it off. This instructable will show you how to make an unusual cosmetic bag or clutch using bubble wrap, clear duct tape, glue, magnets, and a button! It is quick and easy to make and is very functional!  Let us get started!

STEP 1: What You Will Need

Bubble Wrap cut slightly larger than what size clutch you want. Mine was cut 23" X 9"
Clear Duct Tape
1 Button
2 Small magnets
1 Needle optional ( used to pop a few bubbles)
Scissors
Tape measure
Glue I used E-6000

STEP 2: Measure and Cutting

Decide what size you want and add 1-2 inches all the way around for seams and for turning down the two ends.
Cut carefully as not to break the bubbles. It is OK if the bubbles along the seams pop because the tape will cover those areas.
Hem both ends by turning the ends under about 1 inch and fold toward the wrong side of the wrap and tape to secure.

STEP 3: Taping the Wrong Side

Turn the bubble wrap so the wrong side is up.
Cover this side completely with clear Duct Tape. This will give the wrap some strength and weight.

STEP 4: Fan Fold the Clutch

Fan fold the bubble wrap so you will have 2 separate sections inside the clutch and a flap that folds over the front of the purse as shown.
You can fold it so the bubbles are at the bottom and top of the bag or have a straight edge. I liked the bubbles at the top of the bag to give it character.
Please note: When you are fan folding the clutch estimate where the button and magnets will fall and adjust as needed. You will also be deciding how you want the bubbles to fall at the top of the clutch and the bottom. It helps to fold it several times to see what you like.

STEP 5: Tape the Sides of the Clutch

Carefully place a strip of tape along the (right side out) side of the clutch and fold it over towards the back. ( Be sure not to tape the flap of the purse because this sections needs to be movable as to open and close the bag.
Tape the other side.

STEP 6: Add Magnets and Button

Close the clutch and determine where to glue the button and magnets.
Glue them now.
If a bubble is in the center it is OK to pop it so the button or magnets will lie flat.

STEP 7: Sunshiine's Final Thoughts

I am very pleased with the outcome of this clutch/cosmetic bag. I was concerned it might be a little too flimsy to work for this, but  it works out great! This clutch or cosmetic bag is delicate but with care it should last a long time. It is great for just a few items to take with you; like an ID, cash, credit card, lipstick, hair brush, and a mirror.  I thought it would be fun to place some lights inside! Now go make yourself one!

I wish to thank instructables, our sponsors, authors, and loyal readers for making this a great place to share!

After using this for a couple of days it is holding up very well. The magnets work and it is much more durable than you might think! I will be making different versions in the near future! Have a splendid day!

This is one of the most lovely innovative ideas I've found in a long time. Talk about reusing, repurposing, recycling!!! You hit all three in one. I would have to have the bubbles inside...they guys in the family couldn't resist the pop pop popping of the bubble wrap ;-). Susan

Thanks so much Susan for the compliment~ My daughter-in-law really liked this. She has not had any trouble with the bubbles popping but it was quite tempting even for me hehe. Thanks so much for stopping by and do have a safe and happy summer~love your handle~

While this is awesome, I would not be able to resist popping the bubbles...
I have great news for you! I tried making one by ironing the wrap after popping the bubbles! It will work and you still have the great fun in popping all the bubbles! I would add additional layers of clear tape to the wrong side of the wrap. Thanks for commenting and do have a splendorous day!

I have to laugh. I was in the garage yesterday and saw some bubble wrap and thought, "I wonder what I could make with that." Now I know.
