Intro: CD Cable Drum

Have a lot of scrambled wires and cables laying around? don't know what to do with your cake CD case and skrached up discs? want some order? make a cable drum from discs and a toilet paper roll.

STEP 1: Materials

this is what you need :
1. discs (CD's, DVD's whatever)
2. toilet paper roll (can be done with any pipe-like thing)
3. super/crazy/epoxy glue
4. cutting tool
5. some wire
6. (optional) cake CD case

STEP 2: Assembly

1. mark the cutting line on the roll
2. cut the roll
3. glue the roll to the discs
i suggest you allign the discs with a cake disc case
4. make a little hole in the roll to fit the end of the wire
5. fit the end of the wire into the hole in the roll (you can secure it with some glue)
6. roll the wire around the roll

STEP 3: Display

i chose to display my cable drums in a cake CD case, but you can build some other display case or device.

STEP 4: Thanks for the Suggestions

thanks for all your suggestions you gave me - i decided to use one of them, i put some feed holes for the cables

can be done with drill, dremel, cutting tool or even a pair os pointy scisors

I Made It! [TM]

With feed holes, and a cool topping CD (that came along with the USB Swiss-army-knife)

I did cut the side completely, with an x-acto knife, to ease cables insertion (and it does not much reduce the structural integrity). I made the holes with an old soldering iron.
BONUS!!

I have one of the large ones filled with coiled USB cables
Digital Camera USB
Video Camera USB
Mp3 USB
GPS USB
Turntable USB
Generic plain old USB

... so many USB's, such a handy holder!
what is this thing does
well, a cable drum is a way to put order in long cables, so they wouldn't get tangled.
when u pull one wire, others wire separators will turn together... am i wrong?
yes, you are wrong... if you noticed - there are three drums inside the CD case - each one is totally independent and does not move the others.
The truly sad part is, I can't count how many of these little wonders I've thrown out, because I thought they were useless!!!
Preach on brother, I started keeping them and have like 10 spares at my desk now for future projects.
yeah, i have a lot of them + i saved the transparent CD's that come with every case - if anyone has ideas - please - share.
Verry Nice Job.....i have about 20 of these in my attic and a good cable dispencer is neaded.
Oh man. I just threw away 6 of those things! Great idea. Thanks for sharing it.
Wow! this is practical recycling at its best! Thanks.
SUCH a good idea... I love it! I think I will use this for my cell phone charger and camera cords. Awesome!
i'll use my 120 dvd cake
thanks for all the great ideas - the feed holes idea is genious ! and works perfectly. the crank handle though is not practicle if you have more than one cable in the cake - you would rewind all cable instead of only the one you want. it would work if you have only one roll of cable per cake - but very nice idea thanks.
Why didn't I think of that? If you punch a couple small holes in the side, you could have the wire feed out like a dispenser.
That's exactly what I was thinking while I was reading this.
I hate to sound like an echo, but great idea! What a good use for stuff people most throw away. Now only if I had kept some coasters and CD spindles.
