Intro: Chocolate Crackles

In this Instructable, I will show you how to make Chocolate Crackles. Chocolate Crackles are a super easy treat to make and are very popular in Australia. They serve them for kids' birthdays, etc. If you love Rice Krispies (Rice Bubbles) and chocolate, you are going to love these tasty treats.

Don't forget to follow me and check out my other Instructables. :)

Follow the simple steps below or watch the short video tutorial or do both!

STEP 1: Melt Butter and Chocolate

This recipe is incredibly simple and easy to make. Start by adding the chocolate chips and the butter to a large pot. Set the burner to medium-low heat. If it is too hot it will melt the chocolate. You may also use the double boiler method if you like.

Stir gently while the butter and chocolate melt.

NOTE: These ingredients can also be placed in a microwave-safe bowl and melted in the microwave. Use bursts of 20 seconds and then stir, repeat, until melted. It goes pretty fast on the stovetop though.

STEP 2: Coconut and Rice Krispies

Once the butter and chocolate have melted completely dump in the desiccated coconut.

You can leave the coconut flakes as is the way they come or you can put them in a food processor and grind them up finer which produces the desiccated coconut. Totally up to you! Or if you don't like coconut, just leave it out.

Stir that in and then dump in all the Rice Krispies (Rice Bubbles) and stir until well coated.

And just like that, it is ready. Simple huh??

STEP 3: Fill Up the Cups

Line a muffin pan with 12 muffin cups. Or use 2 muffin pans and 24 cups. You can even use the mini muffin pans if you like to make several smaller bite-sized ones.

Use two spoons and scoop and mound up the mixture. I love making 12 large ones. But you can fill up the cups halfway and make 24 with this recipe if desired.

Once the cups are filled place the crackles in the fridge for about 30 minutes or so to set.

STEP 4: Serve!

Now time to enjoy those chocolate crackles. Just remove the paper cups and bite into them. They make great treats for parties, or you can give them as gives during the holidays, or whenever.

And if you always have chocolate and cereal on hand, you can always whip up this fun treat for the family and friends whenever you want.

Enjoy!

Could I simplify things and use Cocoa Krispies instead of melting chocolate bits? A neighbor used to make these many years ago and we called them Rice Krispies Squares as she used a brownie tray and cut them up. Usually it was plain Rice Krispies, but once in awhile she would use Cocoa Krispies as an extra treat.
Hi there, no, even if you use Cocoa Krispies you still need to use the chocolate. The chocolate is what hardens and acts like "glue" to hold it all together. Otherwise you could use marshmallows and just make cocoa rice Krispies treats, but those taste different than chocolate crackles.
Matt, we have been making a variation of these for years. The only difference was adding a container of marshmallow cream and pouring it into a parchment lined baking dish and calling them Chocolate Rice Crispy Treats. I will have to try it without the marshmallow creme. Thanks for all of the new ideas you come up with.
Yep, we in the States have been making Rice Krispies Treats for nearly as long as Rice Krispies have been around (1928). Chocolate Crackles appeared in Australia in 1937. So many fun treats you can make with Rice Krispies!
How about an ice cream spoon to put the mixture in the paper cups.
Ooohhh Matt! You're making me fatt! But I love your recipes! :)
