Intro: Mini Diamond Puzzle Sketchbook

Well I was looking for puzzles on the internet, and I happened to cross this puzzle : http://www.kagenschaefer.com/DiamondBox.html , which brought me to this page: http://www.kagenschaefer.com/Book2.html.

It looked very cool and I wanted to make it for my sketchbook but I didnt see anything on how it worked or anything on how to build it. I thought about it and how it could open and lock for a few minutes until I found out how. This is just a prototype, it isn't my regular sketchbook, just the one that I usually carry around instead of my bulky one.

It is made of cardstock and cardboard glued together, it is very strong and durable and it is being used in my next project(just a hint, it uses my old NXT)

I don't know if the creator would like me showing how to make it(He sells the wooden box one), so I just posted a photo instructable for now, I don't see any copyright or a creative commons license so I think it would be fine if I just credit the person for inspiring me to make this, if anyone knows if I can't, please comment!

Can I download the PDF file without going pro? pls answer fast

Are you planning on updating this?
Once I have the time I will try to, I am very busy lately
Thanks!
I am also making an instructable for a wooden one but it would also work for paper or cardboard
Personally, if I were to make one, I would use probably five pieces instead of four. I just like the number five when it comes to designs. If I wanted a TRON look, I would make six pieces for a hexagon.
I was thinking for my next one to be 5, so the whole hand would be needed to open it. But 4 works fine for me and it looks very good

And I made another instructable, it is the updated version of this, but I am making a wooden one in a few months
great, now I wanna make one.
Thanks! I am working on a step by step instructable for my full sized notebook.
*must resist urge to open openscad...*
*I have the illustrator files on thingiverse, if you want to can you email me the files so I can put it up on thingiverse

Oh, and I am making a wooden one, those files will work but I am improoving it to work better with wood*

Did you just copy that from the other puzzle sketchbook or did you forgot?
I'm pretty impressed by you! You figured out the mechanism just by the pictures on the kagenschaefer-site?

On his site, Kagen Schaefer claims to have designed the lock. If I were you, I'd send him an email about your project, just telling what you did. See how he reacts.

If he objects, dare him to make an instructable of one of his boxes :)

Very cool!

Ah, I didnt see him saying that he made the lock design, When I looked again I saw it. I will email him and see what he says, but because I dont see any copyright or patent or creative commons license(What instructables has), I think it would be fine to just say that I got my idea from him.

And thanks, I am making one for my full sized sketchbook and it will be very cool to carry around! I already have the plans for the full one on my computer(Good ol' Illustrator)

Too bad there isn't any contest that would accept this right now, and I missed the weekly cardboard contest.
If he did design the lock himself, that automatically means that he owns all the rights for it. Anything published without further notice, means that all rights are reserved.

My guess is that the design of the lock is not copyrighted. It probably is an old and known mechanism... But that's just my guess.
So if I say that I got the idea from him, is that fine? I dont even know if this is the same mechanism he made.
I suppose so. Eventually, you made your own version of the lock. In any case, you never copied it deliberately.
I got an email back and I am ok show how to make this.
Cool! I'm curious!
