For my speakers, the first thing to upgrade would be the Visaton FR10's. Tang Band (aka TB Speakers) has a series of 4" full range drivers (the W4 series) that outplay the Visatons, but it comes at a price. Have a look here: https://www.parts-express.com/Search.aspx?keyword=...Second best upgrade would be the capacitors in the filter. Audio-grade cap's start at around US$8,- but I think the improvement will be subtle.

Maybe I used the wrong word to describe what I mean. Tweeters, especially dome-tweeters, have a tendency to sound shrill or sharp. You can see that in the tweeter's frequency characteristics: The sound pressure increases as the frequencies get higher. An ideal tweeter would have a horizontal or flat curve, but most tweeters have an ascending curve.Hope this answers your question.Y.
Thank you, schaapkameel, it's appreciated :)

Particle wood isn’t that bad for prototyping and experimenting with cabinets in my experience. I made the final cabinets from birch, indeed.

As I read it, in the top left corner of the diagram the positive side of the two woofers and the tweeter are joined and attached to the positive input of the amplifier (positive sides of the drivers are marked with a dot).

Thanks for the tips! I found the skewed boxes improve the midtones, which agrees with your remark about the subwoofers. I tried both audio-quality PolyFill and pillow-filling as damping material, bit didn't notice much difference. I haven't tried wool, though.
View Instructable »Thanks :) I made the final cabinets from 18mm birch multiplex. Those sound fine :). In general, heavier cabinets are better. What you want is cabinets that resonate as little as possible with the acoustic energy and sound waves from the drivers inside the cabinet. So heavy 20mm teak wood sounds like a good idea to me.

Hm. I hoped my Instructable could boost Makers of both sexes into speaker building blissdom. I wonder why you choose to depend on your boyfriend to get yourself a fine set of loudspeakers, when you most likely can make those yourself :) x
That's good to hear! Thanks!Y.
