Intro: French (Spool) Knitting

Hello! :) Today I'll be showing you how to french knit, or as it is more commonly know: spool knit.

STEP 1: Supplies

To start off, you're going to need a few things. A large skein of yarn, (I got this one at Walmart) a french knitter, a measuring tape, scissors, and a crochet hook. You can easily pick up a french knitter at many craft stores, or find an instructable on how to make one! You'l learn where the name "spool" comes from.

STEP 2: Beginning the Rope

First, find the end of the yarn, then thread it through the knitter, through the top down and all the way out the bottom. Then loop the yarn around the spikes (or in my case: "U"s') as shown in the pictures.

STEP 3: Hooking the Yarn

Now, lay more string over the "U", as shown in the first picture. Then hook the bottom string as shown, and pull over the "U" (3rd picture). Continue around placing new yarn over the next "U" and looping the yarn beneath over. Continue around, and around, and and around, :) until the rope is as long as you need.

STEP 4: Measuring Off (Optional)

If you have a certain length you need your rope to be, lay down the rope along side a tape measure and measure it. (Mine came to 81 inches.)

STEP 5: Cutting the Rope

When you're ready to finish, cut the rope with 6 inches of slack from the knitter. Next, pull any one of the loops completely off the "U" as shown in the 2nd picture. Then, thread the end through the loop you have made, like picture 3. Repeat for the other 3 and this step is done!

STEP 6: Finished!

All you have to do now is tie a knot in the rope, as close as you can to the end of the rope. Pull it tight and trim the slack off. Pull it out of the rope and you're finished!!

I don't have pictures but you make a loop near the end of the beginning of your yarn by looping the yarn around a finger twice, then pull the part of the yarn band closest to your hand over the other band away from your hand release and do the same thing again pulling the yarn off your finger causing there to be what I call a slip loop that you can tighten or undo. put your crochet needle thru this loop holding the yarn going to the ball away from the loop between your index and middle fingers. holding the crochet needle in the other hand with it threaded thru the loop push the needle towards the string between the fingers. grab the string with the hook and pull the yarn back thru the loop. repeat this until you get a chain. for the next row is very similar. keep the hook in it's loop, push the needle thru the second to last loop in the chain and then catch the yarn being held between fingers and pull back thru both loops leaving you with the needle thru 1 loop. continue looping back thru the chain this way until the end and you will have a double chain, then begin your 3rd chain same as second working off of the new 2nd chain continue adding on chains to make simple scarves baby blankets and the like. Once you have this mastered search how to on youtube to learn more advanced patterns or if I wasn't clear to learn from the beginner on up in styles. I hope I explained so you could understand. My aunt taught me how to chrochet and it is something I have always loved but my hands are slowly getting worse. making it dificulty to do.

Some people make mats out of them, stitching them together in a spiral. You can also make stuffed animals, scarves, and sweaters. Also, Pinterest gives you quite a few ideas.
