~Make your own potpourri with dried lavender flower

~Tie them with other dry flower to make a dry flower bouquet

~Dried Lavender flower powder can be used to make lavender scrub which I have shown in later on in this instructable.

STEP 1: Drying Lavender in Bunches

All you need is

1. Lavender flower cuttings,
2. Elastic Band or thread or raffia.

1. If you have a Lavender plant when they flowers during summer cut lavenders stem. Do not worry if you don't have lavender growing in your back yard. Lavender make a nice indoor plant. So get a planter and pot lavender , when they flower cut them.

2. Now that you have a fresh lavender cutting. Tie then securely with a elastic band or raffia or any thing that can be used as a tie.

3. Once you have tied them nicely chop off the stem one to 2 inches below the raffia , so that all the step are of same hight. You can also leave it as it .

4. Now hang them upside down in a dark place, if possible and after 2 week you will have a dried Lavender bunch. This is the most important step. Remember to hang them flower down as I have shown them in the picture.

STEP 2: Coconut Lavender Body Scrub

  • 1 cup of coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup of epson salt (finely ground) u can run it through the blender to make it smooth
  • 1/4 cup of lavender powder,(Remove the lavender flower from the dried stem and grind it in coffee grinder or magic bullet into a fine dry powder).
  • 4 drops of Lavender essential oil(optional)

Mix all the above ingredient well with a fork, they transfer them in a nice clean glass jar and store the unused portion in the fridge.

Apply lavishly before shower on your body. Remember to Scrub gently. Nothing is more satisfying than knowing that the product you are going to use does not have chemical additives. These last you for month but I like to make them in small batches.

I'd personally use significantly more lavender oil & replace the salt with sugar. Salt is drying being the reason. In addition, speaking from many years experience making various skin & hair care products, I'd grind those lavender flowers very fine. Otherwise the sharp edges of the dried material will scratch your skin, which is quite painful when scrubbing with salts. Epsom salts are also better used for soaks in the bath rather than as a scrub. Coconut oil is also very very slippery in the shower so if you're going to use an oil based scrub, best be sitting down. I've actually injured myself testing oil based bath products. Drier oils can be used, as well as ingredients which allow the oil to more easily wash off your skin & down the drain. I appreciate the idea & love to see others making their own products - far healthier & cheaper - but would personally fine tune this recipe.
Thanks for the tips. I would like to use sugar. I just love coconut base. May be I should put in a caution about it being oily. thanks again.
There are several types of sugar you can use, actually. I've got a large bag of coconut sugar, which doesn't smell like coconut but the granules are much smaller. I also love using 'black' sugar, known as gula merah, which isn't refined like white sugar is & still contains many minerals etc & which doesn't scratch the skin. It still exfoliates really nicely, though. I love coconut oil too, but it's extremely slick. I bruised myself up really good after falling in the shower using mine. There's a specific ingredient which you can add which allows oil to kind of emulsify on contact with water, making using oil based scrubs in the shower much safer.....but I can't remember the name of it right now. It's cheap & effective, though. You might be able to Google it. Thanks again :-)

No..Thank you for all this info. Its very nice of you. I have seen coconut sugar. Have you considered putting an instructable out with this idea and post it for on the budget contest. You for sure will have my vote.

I will make one and send you the picture of the end product.

How do you make the coconut and body scrub? Please reply!

1/4 cup of lavender powder,(Remove the lavender flower from the dried stem and grind it in coffee grinder or magic bullet into a fine dry powder).

Do you know of anywhere to get Lavender this time of year? I would love to do this as a Christmas present!

Amazon sells it as a bunch. Dried flower you can get it in Michaels,in the US.

Buying dried flowers from craft stores isn't the best idea. They can be treated with toxic chemicals & colorants which you don't want in your bath. You can buy just the flowers, dried, from health food stores as well as online. Or buy your own lavender plants in pots & harvest your own.

Very True. I get mine from my back yard and earlier got it from a local organic market in Mn called Valley natural. Yet to explore SFO. It is the beauty of instructable that we get feed back from pro like you and can improve our creation. Thanks for all the input.

Perfect, thanks!

This is a great idea, and as you rightly put it "Nothing is more satisfying than knowing that the product you are going to use does not have chemical additives".. This is what makes DIY stuff like this awesome !!
