Homemade Instant Hot Butterbeer

Intro: Homemade Instant Hot Butterbeer

When I think of presents that I would like to make or receive for the holidays I think of cookies and fudge. Being a Harry Potter fan I thought it would be great to give my friends mugs of hot sweet foamy Butterbeer. Then I thought ... hmmm...that could get messy! Or it could get expensive if you make the trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to get some. Then I thought of the jars of dry soup mix or pancakes that people make up for gift giving. Could I do that for Butterbeer? Well I would do almost anything for Butterbeer so I retreated to my lab (kitchen) and experimented. The results were satisfying and would bring cheer to the most ardent fan of Harry Potter.

STEP 1: Assemble Your Ingredients and Tools

You will need:

1 3.2 ounce pouch instant dry milk
2 3.5 ounce boxes butterscotch cook and serve pudding
6 tsp. dark brown sugar
2 tsp. Butter Buds Sprinkles natural butter flavoring
1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

You will need a few kitchen basics to mix your ingredients:

1 mixing bowl
1 spoon
1 canning funnel (optional)
1 set measuring spoons
1 pint jar for storage

Optional - create or purchase a little decorative jar for gift-giving!

This quantity of mix fills a 1 pint jar. If you want to use a larger jar you will need to double the recipe. If you are making enough for all your friends then multiply by the number of jars you plan to fill.

STEP 2: Mix

Mix all your ingredients together well in the mixing bowl. Make sure they are all dispersed evenly - sometimes brown sugar can clump.

STEP 3: Store

We used a funnel to get our mix into a decorative jar. But careful spooning will work just fine!

STEP 4: Decorative Packaging

To assemble as we have in our photo, you will need:

1 1 pint canning jar with lid
1 decorative spoon
1 tag large enough for the directions
1 small bow and assorted ribbons

This quantity of mix fills a 1 pint jar. If you want to use a larger jar you will need to double the recipe. If you are making enough for all your friends then multiply by the number of jars you plan to fill.

Label your jars "World Famous Magical Instant Butterbeer" or something similar!

Include these directions:
Spoon 3 to 4 heaping spoonfuls of mix into a mug and add hot water. Top with whipped cream and Butterscotch Syrup if desired (and who wouldn't). Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Add a bow to the lid in the color of your recipient's Hogwarts House.

Tie the on the spoon with some colorful magical stars.

Now you can enjoy a hot foamy Butterbeer and the faces of your friends when you hand them their present.

cook and serve pudding always says to cook for five minutes. Your recipe says to just add hot water, how does that work?. Is there a reason you didn't use instant pudding? Please note I am just curious. Your recipe sounds wonderful. (just having trouble finding ingredients in San Diego!)
Hi and thank you for your interest in my post. We don't want to cook and serve our pudding because we don't want the pudding mix to thicken too much. We want a hot chocolate mouth feel instead of a pudding feel. I specify cook and serve because that is what it says on the box. I never could find butterscotch flavor instant pudding. I just looked on Amazon and they do have Jello brand Butterscotch cook and serve pudding. But guess what! They have Butterscotch instant pudding too. Go figure! If you try the instant pudding let me know how it turns out.
I keep the brown sugar from clumping by spooning it into a cup and I add in a little bit of the other ingredients at a time and mix it in the cup. Once it's grainy and "dry" (not clumping at all) in the cup then I pour it into the big bowl and mix everything together. I get no clumping and nice even distribution.

We need a UK version as we can't get all your ingredients over here :(

Oh No! The UK must have it's Butterbeer! I guess the main problem is the Butter Buds? Butter Buds is a dried butter that is good for dieters because it adds flavor without adding fat. Would a dried whey product give the flavor it needs? Might be OK without it just add more dried milk...

Hi again kpurse. I was speaking with a Scottish acquaintance and she said she couldn't get pumpkin pie spice. I was wondering if this was an ingredient that you couldn't get. It is nothing more than the same spices as mulling spices but we need them to be in powdered form. I tried to cut down my recipe for pumpkin pie spice and this is what I came up with:

1 TB. ground cinnamon

2/3 tsp. ground ginger

2/3 tsp. ground nutmeg

1/2 tsp. ground allspice

1/2 tsp. ground cloves

Of course this still makes a lot more than you need but I have always found it to be handy to have around. I even put it in smoothies.

Best,

Judy

I have never see this before. Thanks for the introduction and easy recipe!

Cheere

Thanks! To the best of my knowledge I developed this recipe before anyone else.

I have a great idea for you Judy...I'll tell only you. Develop a brew using Nutella® hazelnut spread.

Yeah, I hear your gears turning now!

more brain stimulation for you.

This looks a lot of fun! Full marks for ingenuity, and it sounds great! I would love making this with my kids :-)

However JK Rowling was inspired by real, historical "buttered beer" - with abit more of an alcoholic kick!! There is a reference made to it in 1588 (no less! ) see here for some details:

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/butterbeer

Essentially beer with various spices such as nutmeg & cloves as well as eggs, sugar and butter.

The original referenced recipe is here:

So, however you're having your butterbeer it seems perfect for the christmas season - enjoy! :-)

I am so impressed! I will definitely look this up! I once found a bottle of Merlin's Ale at World Market. It said on the back that Merlin was baptized by St. Mungo! J. K. Rowling is constantly doing stuff like that where you find that some tidbit in the books has a real source of reference! See she did it again!

But, but where’s the beer! I was so up for this!

DavidC415 - My thoughts exactly.
I thought it'd be something like hot buttered rum.
But it looks really good anyways - and a splash of rum might be just the thing for it.

Now theres a good idea...
I brew my own and was waiting for the beer bit...very dissapointed...
