Intro: Homemade Tootsie Rolls

Want to have lots of Tootsie Rolls quickly and cheaply? This recipe gets the job done with candies that taste like Tootsie Rolls, but are much softer than the store-bought kind.

Seriosusly, this is easy. If you have all of the ingredients, you're only about 10 minutes away from eating them up.

STEP 1: Ingredients

OK, let's get started, here's what you need
  •    2 tablespoons butter (29g), softened
  •    1/2 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  •    3 cups (360g) confectioners' sugar
  •    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  •    3/4 cup (85g) dry milk powder
  •    1/2 (120mL) cup white corn syrup

Note that that is dry milk powder, not instant milk.

STEP 2: Knead It!

Throw all of the ingredients into one large mixing bowl and knead it until it looks like one large lump of tootsie. It will have the consistency of Play-Doh. It may not seem like there's enough moisture in there when you start, but keep with it and it should turn out just fine.

STEP 3: Shape It

To make your own rolls, just tear off a chunk of the tootsie dough, roll it up, and cut pieces off. Eat it up right there or wrap it in plastic wrap or wax paper to save it for later.

That's it! Enjoy.

Beautiful ✌️??????????? ???
hhhmmmm, I dont think we have tootsie rolls in Australia, ill have to make some and see what its all about
Craig3 they are Really good. And no you don't. I know because I've lived most of my life in Australia and now in Canada. Hope you enjoy them.
We do have tootsie rolls. SA. In Rite Price. There heaps yummy. But this recipe wasnt much better. We dont have corn syrup either. I found a replacement. Certainly not the best. If we DID have corn syrup on the other hand, it probably would be very nice.
I've never seen them in Sydney though.
Yeah, I doubt they'd be everywhere in Aus. It sucks that we don't have the same ingredients. :(
corn syrup is glucose syrup though, should find that with all the cake decorating crap in woolies or something?
Aaahk. Shall try that then. Thanks!
Pitt Street, Miranda, Chatswood last time I was home.
Go to Sugar Fix. I'm a dual citizen, and had to find my candy fix.
I'm gonna make some but I'm gonna make a big tootsie BRICK :D just kidding I'll probably make little cubes then give some to my mom

If you roll it up and cut them, and place them into the fridge for 30 minutes, they solidify a bit more, which makes them easier to eat, and store for later.

if you get grey sand like I did,try melting butter and adding that

I made these it took a Long time but they were amazing!
i tried making this, but so far mine just looks like grey sand. What am i doing wrong?
Are you sure you have all the moisture giving ingredients and that you are using dry milk powder NOT instant milk? That is where I would start.

Instant milk would more than likely take up all your moisture. Just a thought. Good luck!
Maybe you could bake it at a low temperature for a couple hours to increase the chewiness if an exact match to the original candy is needed.
Can't wait to try thanks
