Intro: How to Never Pay for Music

In this instructable, learn how you never will have to pay for music... and yet there is no spyware and no viruses. A basic knowlege of computer and internet workings is required for this article.

STEP 1: Supplies

You will need the following materials:
Audiacity editor: (link)

A working highspeed-like internet connection. If you don't have one, try AT&T Yahoo. (link)

In addition you will need a sound card that can record Stereo Mix or a double miniplug cable.

Once you have all the supplies EXCEPT the double miniplug cable, proceed to the next step to determine if you will need the cable.

STEP 2: Determine If You Need a Double Miniplug Cable

This is a really simple step. Open Audacity and open the little menu highlighted in the picture. If you see Line Out, Stereo Out, or Stereo Mix, you do not need the Double Miniplug Cable.
Otherwise, head to Best Buy, CompUSA, or 'the Shack' (RadioShack).

STEP 3: Plug in the Cable

(skip this step if you do not need a cable)

Now you need to plug in your cable. Plug one end into your microphone in port and the other into your headphones out port.

STEP 4: Get Some Free Music

You may be wondering, where will all this music come from? Open a new browser window and type in Napster.com. Click the red-boxed link. "Not Ready to Get Napster? Click Here". This will take you to the page of any free music you like. But don't listen to anything quite yet. We want to record it so you can keep it past the three plays-per-song limit.

STEP 5: Disclaimer

--DISCLAIMER--
I am not responsible for any legal issues you get into by sharing this music illegally.
By continuing to step 6 you indemnify me from any and all legal issues you get into by sharing this music. If you don't agree, click here.

STEP 6: Ready and Record

Your cable should be in. You have agreed to my disclaimer. You are on the Napster site.
Find the free music you want. Start Audacity recording on Stereo Mix/Out or Line Out, or Microphone if you use a cable, then play your music. If you use a cable you will not hear anything. Audacity will be recording. Then when the song finishes, stop recording. Export as a WAV file. Now you have music. Absolutely free. Proceed to suck every single song down from Napster.com. Who needs $8.95 per month?

STEP 7: Alternative Method

Get some P2P software, bundled with a couple quarts of spyware and a bottle of viruses. Then sift through have a dozen fake songs to find the real one. Have fun.

STEP 8: Conclusion

I've just shown you how to get almost every single song in the world for free. Tell your friends. Comment.

*cough* i havent experienced problems*cough*
nasty coughs you have there, did you catch a virus???
People if you dont know yet Lime, frost, bearshare,ALL of those are open P2P sharing=very dangerous .For your PC and issues with the law.Bit torrents are MILES safer than P@P,and if you're not "selling" what your downloading there's no worry.......As far as recording try this http://www.applian.com/replay-music/ Works like a charm!!!!!
BitComment + ThePirateBay + BushTorrent Spyware? Fake songs? A thing of the past, my friend... [educational uses only] trebuchet03, I think most people who pirate music fully understand the implications of it. Many of them also understand that if they are going to live a life, they need to live it - not let a bunch of greedy RIAA bastards tell them what to do.
"not let a bunch of greedy RIAA bastards tell them what to do." Ah another brain dead anarchist. I got news for all you dimbulbs. The artists and music companies own the music!! It's only for those who legally pay for it. If we were all to decide which products in life we felt like paying for or ripping off your life would be soon be a disastrous hell(well I am leaping a huge chasm here and assuming it's not already - but since you at least have access to a computer and a means to listen to music, I'll assume you at least have a job and or the means to buy things).
I support bands I enjoy by seeing live concerts and buying merchandise directly through them. Let me break it to you: The majority of CD profits do not go to the band. Sorry to interrupt your dreamworld where there is no such thing as greed.
I agree that this is a stupid argument. I personally do not have the money to go out and buy a CD, even at half price, yet I have a computer. It was given to me. Just one of the issues in your statement. Oh, another thing... don't call people brain dead.
your brain dead just funny
if they were to charge like 2 pounds for a cd, then may be i would buy it, but NO WAY am i paying 16.99 for one disk i can do myself for about 30 pence cost of cd+electricity used
i personally dont think theres anything morally wrong with this not that i ever do but i already listen to music for free on aol radio cuase im to lazy to look up music on the internet so why not just record some so i can bring it around with me.
Yeah, record companies don't make money by way of radio or streaming music online, so what is the difference?
Actually they do get paid royalties by the station/website, but I'm not against pirating. I do however believe that if you really like a song you should buy it tp support the artist so that they can make more songs that you will probably like.
This is a pointless argument.
Yes, actually. I am starting a new guide, a shortened version of which will be on instructables (I am publishing it in book form) - How To REALLY Never Pay For Music: The Ultimate Guide to Music Downloading. It will include BitTorrent, LimeWire, and all of the other methods in feedback I have received from instructables. FYI - everyone who said to use firefox, i am using it now and will use it always. Thanks for the advice. I am not leaving instuctables, but will spend considerably less time here as I have in the past.
i use my trusty firefox addon called "download helper"
it picks up mp3 files that are played in a webpage it works well for Ilike.com
if you run out of plays just create a second user and download in that one!
Dude you left a comment on a similar instructable that used a mic instead and said that there way was stupid, but yours is too, just use the stereo mix on your computer. NO mic OR cables are needed, you are able to bypass the sound card all together so its easier and you get perfect quality (until its compressed)
