Intro: How to Use a Tie

One end should be considerably wider than the other. Make sure the wider end is on the right, and about a foot (30cm) lower than the thinner side on the left.

STEP 1: Tie Start 2

Cross the wide end over the narrow end, creating somewhat of an uneven "X" with the thinner side on the bottom and the wider side on top.

STEP 2: Tie Start 3

The top "V" from the "X" you created and the collar of your shirt should make a loop. Cross the wide end of your tie under the thin end and through the loop.

STEP 3: Tie Start 4

Bring the wide end back down to where it was before you looped it through the upper "V".

STEP 4: Tie Start 5

Pull the wide end underneath the narrow end and to the right, back through the "V" loop and to the right again so that the wide end is inside out.

STEP 5: Tie Start 6

Cross the wide end over the thin end again, crossing to the right.

STEP 6: Tie Start 7

Repeat step three. and There should be somewhat of a loose knot wrapped around the thinner end now. Take the wider end that you just pulled through the loop and put it through the loose knot. you arefully and using both hands, tighten the knot until it is resting a small distance below the collar; about an inch (1.5cm).

That looks like a "half Windsor" knot?
Let me show you something.

Looking sharp, thanks for providing such accurate measurements!

You should mention that this is a 'half windsor' knot. For those without the same neckline, the reference point when aligning the tie at the start is from where the wrap-around meets the portion that has an obvious stitching.

Also, (though I prefer my ties a little shorter) it's generally observed that the proper length for a tie is for the tip of the wide end to touch the top of your belt.
