Intro: How to Take Apart a Non-Alkaline Battery
A Non-alkaline battery is a source of zinc and carbon rods.

Please be sure to use only non-alkaline batteries.
STEP 1: List of Materials
You will need:
needle-nose pliers
non-alkaline battery
paper towels
gloves
STEP 2: Remove the Plastic Cover
Use needle-nose pliers to remove the plastic cover on the battery.
STEP 3: Take Off the Zinc Layer
Use needle-nose pliers to undo the crimped zinc at the postive end of the battery. Then peel the zinc layer off.
STEP 4: Remove the Carbon Rod
Using needle-nose pliers, pull the carbon rod out of the encasement. Be steady or the carbon rod will break.
STEP 5: Remove the Top From the Carbon Rod
Holding the carbon rod with a paper towel, use the needle-nose pliers to pull the top from the rod.
STEP 6: Storage
Make sure to wrap the carbon rod in a paper towel to prevent a mess.

Do you mean solder? That is a very good trick. How do you prepare it for use?
Do you use the carbon rods for something?
