Replace the lead with a decent quality one. It is a safety component (although looking at the state of some of the cheap multimeter leads, you wouldn't know it!) I'm sure it's all very well using the broken end on low voltage circuits, but it's a bad habit to start...
Oh, and I thought only analogue meters had needles! LOL
