Intro: How to Make a Foam Helmet Top

Hello again everyone. Foam-Smith is back with yet another great invention. This step by step guide will help you to make a basic round helmet top. Please note, I will have many more creations along the way based on this model design and to save time, i will specify in that instructable            Please refer to foam helmet top     . That will help, to let you know that you need to refer back to this instructable to help you in the next step of the design.

STEP 1: Material's

1 (quarter piece) of full camping foam matt.
colored duck-tape
cardboard or anything else you can use to transfer the designs to hard material for accurate shape tracing too later, transfer on to the camping matt

...everyone has been asking me...okay i made a 4 inch line..then went in the middle,so 2 inches in and then went 7 inch up...from there ...I took the for inch line went on each corner and went straight up and mad a square..from the middle point I curved my sides till they meet each end corner of the 4 inch line.. and that is how I got my shapes...Again like I said.. everyones head is different and this method will not work for some..thats why I have mentioned in the beginning to use cardboard until you get your shapes right and then transfer the shape design too your camping matt...I hope this better helps your people

STEP 2: Beginning

cut out your 4 shapes of the helmet design, that will later be fused together to make the crown of the helmet

STEP 3:

Begin by taping 2 pieces of the same shape together. start taping from the flat part and slowly work you way up

STEP 4:

When your done doing the first half it should look something like this

STEP 5:

Now repeat the process for the other 2. When all 4 pieces become 2 pieces repeat the same process to put them all together. it should look like this when you are done.

STEP 6:

Next tape up all 4 lines on the out side of the helmet top. Follow all four lines. it should look like this when finished

STEP 7:

Well thats it. your all done.

Hi, could I join a second rounded triangle to the bottom of a triangle to make a globe pattern?
it should work the same right? just elongated.
very sorry been off here for a long time..yes that should work just fine and will give it a nice shape

I've been trying to find a pattern or template for a simple dome, apparently there's no such thing as "simple"! But I can scale this down, thanks very much

what on ehas to do is measur the roundness of ones head..then from there you need to measure from the bottom of your earlobe and measure up to the top of your head..this will produce the cup circumfrence you are looking for to fit your head
Thank you! it sounds simple - now that someone's said it plainly and simply with no foo-farrah
Thanks, this was very useful; I'm making a futuristic armour, and i needed the top part sorted out. Very useful!
your welcome!!!. yae my design will make a perfect helmet top any time. just if you need it more round and longer, all you really need to do is extend the length of the bottom piece to 4 of the foam shapes when making the helmet and it will turn out fine. Im working on a system to trace the shape and scan it into a JPG so everyone can just print of the shape I mad.

did you end up getting around to making the jpg template?
im having trouble getting to to join on the sides to make a proper curve.

yae sorry.. the templeat wont work nor do i have the shapes any more...you will find all the answers u nees in step one.. on the material page...I suggest using carboard to get the right shape then foam.. I realized my templet will not work because everyone has different heads shape... so follow this and u will do fine......

does anyone know now the "foam-piece-size-to-head-size" measurments?

The measurments I mad was 7 inch tall-4 inch wide

How do I figure out the measurements for the triangles

im very sorry but.. there are know real measurments for that.. you just have to basically eye it.. but I do remember it went something like 7 inch tall by 4 inch wide....because again everyones head is different... because as you fold and bend the size gets smaller.!!Sorry thats really all i can say.....

got it!!! It`s the circumfrance of your head divided by 4 for the width of the pieces and the size of your head down the middle divided by 2 for the length. I think that`s correct anyway...
I want to make WW II but I can't get the autentic form so I'll use your way to make the form but with cardboard, can I?
